Brad Marchand didn’t need long to leave a mark in his first game back with the Florida Panthers, but the bigger takeaway was how jarring the night felt for him after months away.
Marchand returned Sunday night in Florida’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks, and he admitted the pace hit him fast.
“It was sort of a rude awakening being out there,’’ Marchand said after the game. “I only had a few morning skates, practices with the guys. The speed of the game and the intensity certainly ramped up a ton.
”But it was great to be back out there. It’s going to take some time to get the timing and everything back, but it’s incredible being back out there, being part of the group.’’
He still found the net. Marchand scored his first goal of the season with 1:50 left in the third period, helping Florida force overtime. The Panthers have now gone to overtime in each of their first three games for the first time in franchise history.
His return comes at a useful moment for Florida, with Sasha Barkov expected to miss at least the next three weeks because of a suspected left knee injury. Marchand stepped into the lineup and effectively filled Barkov’s spot, with Sam Reinhart moving to center for the first time since his days with the Buffalo Sabres.
Coach Paul Maurice said he liked what that group showed, even with Marchand still shaking off the rust.
“When he touches the puck, something is happening,’’ Maurice said. “He’s really competitive, as they learned. He’s an unusual player, and as his linemates get more comfortable with him, they’ll be able to do some things.’’
Marchand, playing in his first game since March 6, was held to 13:10 of ice time. That wasn’t surprising given the layoff, and the Panthers spent plenty of the night on the penalty kill anyway after Anaheim scored all three of its goals on the power play.
“The potential is there for sure. They are both incredible players, make good plays,’’ Marchand said of his new line.
“We had a few looks tonight, but it’s tough for those guys. They know I’m just getting back, and it’s been almost six months since I played a game.
I’ve only been skating for a month now. So, I kind of bring them down a little bit, just with my timing and the speed and all of that.
We’re working through that together.
“But, when I get back up to speed, we have great potential to be a really good line.”
The Panthers were also without Aaron Ekblad, who left the team and returned to South Florida to be with his wife Dayna for the birth of the couple’s first child. Maurice said Ekblad will not fly back west and will miss Tuesday’s game at Los Angeles before rejoining the team when it returns home.
Florida’s next stop is Game No. 4 against the Kings on Tuesday night at Crypto Arena. The Panthers won the meeting there 2-0 last season, and the teams will meet again in Florida on Jan.
- Los Angeles leads the all-time regular-season series 27-17-1, with three ties.
After that, the Panthers head home for their opener against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Panthers Waste Strong Night In A Loss That Will Frustrate Fans
A strong territorial performance still left Florida empty-handed Monday night, as the Panthers fell 3-2 to the Ducks in overtime despite doing plenty of the driving at even strength. They outshot Anaheim and controlled much of the flow, but the night kept slipping away in the margins, where special teams tilted the outcome and turned a solid road effort into a frustrating loss.
Brad Marchand gave Florida the lift it needed with his first goal of the season to pull the Panthers level late in regulation, setting up a chance to finish the comeback. Instead, the power play never delivered for Florida, going 0-for-4, while Anaheim cashed in repeatedly with the extra skater and eventually found the finish it needed to put the Panthers in a familiar kind of sting. Panthers Suddenly Face A Costly Barkov Question They Cant Ignore
Aleksander Barkovs injury has put the Panthers in an all-too-familiar midseason holding pattern, with the captain expected to miss some time while an MRI is set to help clarify the full extent of the issue. Any absence for Barkov changes the look of Floridas center depth and forces the front office to at least consider how much strain it can absorb before needing outside help.
NHL Networks Elliotte Friedman added a new layer to the conversation by floating Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin as a potential name if Barkovs situation drags on, but the idea comes with a significant hurdle. Detroit is not interested in a rebuild and would want a player who can help right away in return, which makes any serious pursuit a complicated match for Florida if it ever gets that far. Panthers Suddenly Face An Early Blue Line Test
The Panthers blue line is already being asked to adjust early in the season, with Aaron Ekblad set to miss Sundays game against the Anaheim Ducks because of an undisclosed injury. Florida will get Gustav Forsling back after he sat out the previous game against the San Jose Sharks, which at least gives the defense group one familiar piece back as the schedule keeps moving.
Paul Maurice also confirmed Brad Marchand will make his 2026-27 season debut, adding another notable layer to the days roster news. Between the turnover on defense and the addition of a player many around the team have been waiting to see in game action, the Panthers have a little more sorting out to do than they did a night ago.
