Josh Pate isn’t ready to call Florida a playoff-level force, but he does think there’s real reason to believe Jon Sumrall can squeeze more out of the Gators than people expect.
That’s the heart of the buzz around Gainesville this offseason. The broad view still has Florida landing somewhere in the middle of the SEC pack, or maybe closer to the bottom half of the 16-team league. That isn’t really a shot at Sumrall so much as a reflection of how brutal the conference is and how many questions still hang over the roster, especially up front on the offensive line.
Still, Pate came away from a spring look at Florida with a different kind of feeling. He shared that view with Michael Bratton of “that SEC podcast” during Media Days in Tampa, Florida, and he pointed to a team that feels noticeably different under Sumrall.
"I watched them in spring... it feels so much different (under Jon Sumrall)."
Pate’s bigger point is that Florida has the kind of talent that could make people look foolish if the pieces finally click. He doesn’t see the Gators as part of the SEC’s top tier, with Georgia and Texas at the front and a second group of teams clustered behind them. But he does think Florida has enough to be dangerous if one major area improves.
"I don't think [Florida] would be in the second pack if people here had to rate that," Pate told Bratton. "[But] if you could sell me that their offensive line is going to be above average...they've got a bunch of talent elsewhere."
That belief comes from what Pate saw in practice and from what he thinks went wrong before. In his view, the roster was better than the results showed under Billy Napier, and the 4-8 finish didn’t match the talent on hand.
"I went down there in the spring and watched them practice. You would never have known that team went 4-8.
They underachieved mightily with that roster talent," Pate added. "It's not the first time I've watched a Sumrall team, but it's the first time I've watched his Florida team practice and when you compare it to what it used to feel like...there's so much juice."
That kind of confidence in Sumrall isn’t coming out of nowhere. His track record over four seasons as a head coach has been to meet or beat expectations, and he’s built a reputation for demanding a lot from his players. He also hasn’t shied away from surrounding himself with capable assistants.
Florida’s staff has drawn respect, too. Coordinators Buster Faulkner and Brad White are well regarded around the sport, while top assistants such as offensive line coach Phil Trautwein and defensive backs coach Brandon Harris have already had success elsewhere.
So while the outside expectation remains cautious, the optimism around Sumrall has a real foundation. The bar in Gainesville is high, and Sumrall is stepping into a job where that comes with the territory. The belief is that he’ll chase that standard hard and try to get Florida football back where its most successful coaches once kept it.
