In a thrilling showdown in Nashville, the No. 22 Vanderbilt Commodores showcased their prowess by toppling the fourth-ranked Florida Gators 91-74. This victory not only ended Florida's impressive 12-game winning streak but also put a dent in their aspirations for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Vanderbilt, the fourth seed, has been on a roll, securing their fourth consecutive win. With this triumph, they advance to face either Mississippi or No. 17 Arkansas, eyeing their first tournament title since 2012.
Tyler Tanner was the standout for the Commodores, dropping 20 points. He wasn't alone in his efforts, as Jalen Washington chipped in 17 points, Duke Miles added 15, Devin McGlockton contributed 12, and AK Okereke rounded it out with 11. The depth of Vanderbilt's roster was on full display, with six different players hitting from beyond the arc and every player scoring.
Despite Florida's dominance on the boards, out-rebounding Vanderbilt 38-23, they struggled offensively, particularly in the first half where they missed 12 of 13 shots. Thomas Haugh led the Gators with 19 points, while Boogie Fland, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu added 15, 13, and 12 points respectively.
The game turned when Miles hit a crucial 3-pointer, giving Vanderbilt a lead they wouldn't relinquish. By halftime, the Commodores were up 47-34, and they maintained control throughout the second half. Vanderbilt extended their lead to 76-51 with just over eight minutes remaining, thanks to a technical foul on Florida's coach Todd Golden, which Miles capitalized on with a pair of free throws.
This win positions Vanderbilt to potentially capture their third SEC Tournament title, a feat they last achieved in 1951. The Commodores are riding high, and if they maintain this momentum, they could be a formidable force in the postseason.
