Urban Meyer recently shared his behind-the-scenes role in bringing Jon Sumrall to the Florida Gators as head coach. Meyer, who knows a thing or two about setting high standards from his own successful tenure at Florida, offered insights into the hiring process during a chat on "The Triple Option" podcast.
Back in 2005, Meyer made waves when he arrived at Florida, famously withholding the privilege of wearing the Gators logo until players earned it. This approach set the tone for a championship-winning culture, culminating in a BCS National Championship in 2006. Now, Sumrall is taking a page from Meyer’s playbook, implementing the same logo policy as a nod to the program’s storied past.
Meyer’s involvement in Sumrall’s hiring was more than just a casual endorsement. With a strong connection to Florida’s athletic director, Scott Strickland, Meyer was asked to do some digging into Sumrall’s background.
“I got involved, spoke to other coaches, and did my homework,” Meyer explained. He even went as far as reviewing about 10 interviews of Sumrall to gauge his presence and poise.
Impressed by Sumrall’s demeanor and leadership qualities, Meyer was ready to make his pitch. However, there was a wrinkle: Sumrall’s wife is an Auburn Tiger.
Meyer, undeterred, went into full recruiting mode to ensure Sumrall felt at home in Gainesville. "When I heard that, I flipped the hat on backwards, and I put on a recruiting speech," Meyer recounted, expressing his pride in Sumrall’s decision to join the Gators.
Meyer emphasized the unique challenges that come with coaching at a high-profile program like Florida. “Florida's a unique place,” he noted, highlighting the demanding nature of the job and the need for the right fit. With Meyer’s endorsement and his own impressive track record, the Gators are hopeful that Sumrall is the right person to lead them forward, much like Meyer did for Ohio State with Ryan Day.
