Florida's basketball program is making waves this season, with junior forward Thomas Haugh earning a spot on the Associated Press' All-American Third Team. Alongside him, junior center Rueben Chinyelu received an Honorable Mention All-American nod, marking a significant achievement for the Gators as they boast multiple All-Americans for the first time since 2014.
Haugh has been a powerhouse for Florida, leading the team with an impressive 17.1 points per game. His dynamic play has been crucial in securing the SEC regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
Hailing from New Oxford, Pennsylvania, Haugh reached the 1,000-point milestone in February. Despite missing out on the SEC Player of the Year award, which went to Arkansas freshman Darius Acuff Jr., Haugh was named to the All-SEC First Team and received second-team All-American honors from The Sporting News.
Chinyelu, a 6-foot-11 standout from Enugu Agidi, Nigeria, has been a defensive force, earning the SEC's Defensive Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. His decision to return to Florida after testing the NBA Draft waters has paid off, as he's posted the best rebounding season for the Gators in 50 years, setting a record for offensive rebounds.
UF head coach Todd Golden, who recruited Chinyelu from the NBA Academy Africa, has praised his growth and impact. Chinyelu's ability to dominate both ends of the floor and his leadership have been invaluable. His energy and defensive communication have elevated the entire frontcourt, which includes Alex Condon and senior Micah Handlogten.
Golden highlights Chinyelu's development as a vocal leader, noting how his presence boosts the team's morale and performance. As the Gators continue their journey, the contributions of Haugh and Chinyelu are sure to keep Florida in the spotlight.
