Florida has beaten Florida State plenty of times in the modern era, but only a handful of those wins truly bent the road ahead for one program or the other. Some were clean, some were ugly, and some barely registered in the moment. These six, though, left a mark that reached well beyond the final whistle.
The most recent entry on the list comes from 2025, and it already has a chance to matter in a big way. Florida’s win over FSU last year could end up being one of the early turning points of the Jon Sumrall Era.
Jadan Baugh’s 266 rushing yards made him the player Sumrall wanted to keep most, and that led to a Christmas Eve visit that helped convince Baugh to stay in Gainesville. We still have to see what 2026 looks like, but if Baugh and Florida put together a big year, that game will be remembered very differently.
A year earlier, Florida’s 2024 win carried a different kind of weight. If the Gators had somehow lost to a two-win FSU team in the finale, even with Scott Stricklin saying Billy Napier was safe going into 2025, there would have been real pressure to revisit that call.
Instead, Florida finished on a four-game winning streak, and that gave the program some positive momentum heading into the offseason. Had the result gone the other way, there’s a world where Lane Kiffin ends up in Gainesville before the 2025 season.
Whether that would have been a good thing is still an open question.
The 2018 matchup wasn’t a classic on the field, but it mattered plenty on the FSU side. Florida rolled 41-14 behind La’Mical Perine’s 129 rushing yards on 13 carries and Trevon Grimes’ five catches for 118 yards, finishing Dan Mullen’s first regular season at 9-3.
The bigger ripple came for the Seminoles, who were officially denied a bowl game and saw a 36-year streak end. That loss drained what little goodwill Willie Taggart had left, and the fallout helped set up his firing midway through the 2019 season, which then opened the door to the Mike Norvell Era.
Then there’s 2006, when one throw carried enormous weight. Chris Leak’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Baker doesn’t always get mentioned alongside Florida’s most famous moments, but it may have been the play that made the national title possible.
FSU’s next drive reached the 29-yard line, but Florida held on for a 21-14 win. From there, the Gators beat Arkansas in the SEC title game, slipped into the BCS championship against Ohio State, and crushed the Buckeyes to win their second national title and lock in their place as a modern blue blood.
The 2001 game remains one of the most controversial in the rivalry. Florida won 37-13, but Earnest Graham left with a sprained right knee.
Afterward, Steve Spurrier suggested FSU may have hurt Graham on purpose, saying, "The tape didn't show it clearly, but the (FSU LB) was doing something down there." That injury mattered because Florida had to come back the next week and face Tennessee, a game pushed to the end of November because of 9/11.
Without Graham, Florida lost 34-32, missed out on the SEC title game, and saw its national title hopes disappear. As a bonus ripple, Tennessee then lost to a Nick Saban-led LSU team in the SEC championship, helping launch one of the great coaching runs in the sport.
The oldest game on the list is 1995, when Danny Wuerffel threw for 443 yards and Florida built a huge first-half lead before surviving 35-24. That win sent the Gators to the Fiesta Bowl to face Nebraska for the national title.
Florida would rather forget what happened next, with Tommie Frazier running wild, but the fallout still shaped what came after. Bob Pruett, the defensive coordinator in 1995, left after the season, and Bob Stoops was brought in for 1996.
