Rece Davis didn’t waste time drawing a line after Week 4: Florida looks like a problem.
And not just any problem. The College GameDay host said the Gators are built in a way that can make life miserable for Texas and Georgia when those matchups arrive later this season. His message was simple - if you’re going to deal with Florida, you’d better be ready for a heavyweight fight.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Davis praised the Gators after their 52-28 blowout of then-No. 4 Ole Miss in the Swamp.
“Florida’s real. I mean they’re real, real.
Florida answered the way they’ve answered all year. They run the football right through your face.
They don’t care if you know. They come and they punch you right in the mouth with that running game,” he said.
Florida is 4-0 under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, and the identity is clear. The Gators leaned on a bruising ground game against Ole Miss, piling up 302 rushing yards. Jadan Baugh powered the attack with 142 yards and three touchdowns, and the offense averaged nearly six yards per carry.
That wasn’t a one-week spike, either. Davis said the same formula showed up the week before in Florida’s 44-39 road win over Auburn, and he sees a team that keeps coming with the same physical approach no matter who is across from it.
“They did it to Auburn. They did it to Ole Miss,” Davis continued.
“They’ve got Texas and Georgia coming up. You better strap ’em up tight when you play Sumrall’s team, because they are going to hit you and they’re going to run the football.”
That warning lands with extra weight because the two teams Davis mentioned are sitting at the top of the rankings. Texas and Georgia were No. 1 and No. 2 after Week 4, and both are scheduled to see Florida later this year. The Longhorns host the Gators on Oct. 17 in Austin, while Georgia gets Florida on Oct. 31 in Atlanta in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
Both are still carrying national title expectations. Texas has already cleared major early hurdles by beating No.
1 Ohio State and No. 14 Tennessee, while Georgia kept rolling by dominating Oklahoma.
Florida’s rise has been just as notable. The win over Ole Miss pushed the Gators up 13 spots to No. 8 in the AP Top 25, their highest ranking since 2020 and their first top-10 appearance since 2021. They now sit just behind Alabama and ahead of the Rebels they just flattened.
There’s still plenty for Sumrall’s team to clean up. The Gators go to Missouri next, and the defense has real issues, ranking 72nd in FBS in total output, 113th against the run, and allowing 6.2 yards per carry. Florida also has to stay healthy, avoid turnovers, and keep turning long drives into points.
But the bigger picture is hard to miss. Florida is winning with a punishing style that travels, and it’s already been too much for quality SEC competition. For Texas and Georgia, the warning is out there now: Florida is not waiting politely for its turn.
