NC State is turning to a familiar face to lead its men’s basketball program after a brief stint with Will Wade. Justin Gainey, currently Tennessee’s associate head coach and a former NC State player, is set to take the helm, according to multiple reports.
Rick Barnes, Tennessee’s head coach, couldn’t speak more highly of Gainey: “I don’t think there’s anybody in the country that loves NC State more than Justin Gainey. He’s got an incredible feel for the game, understands players, and is a terrific recruiter. In today’s NIL era, he’s exactly what a program needs.”
The move comes after Wade’s unexpected departure to LSU following NC State’s early exit from the NCAA Tournament. Wade’s tenure, marked by initial excitement, ended abruptly, leaving NC State scrambling after losing eight of their last ten games.
Athletics director Boo Corrigan acted swiftly, meeting with candidates like Saint Louis coach Josh Schertz, Gainey, and Furman’s Bob Richey. Schertz opted to stay with Saint Louis, and Richey reportedly withdrew from consideration.
Gainey, who played for NC State from 1996 to 2000, has been instrumental at Tennessee, especially on defense, where the team ranked 15th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. His coaching journey includes stops at Elon, Appalachian State, Santa Clara, Arizona, and Marquette. He also held administrative roles at NC State under coach Sidney Lowe.
His recruiting prowess is notable, having brought in Tennessee’s star freshman, Nate Ament. Barnes praised Gainey, calling him “one of the finest people I’ve ever been around.”
NC State legends like Torry Holt and basketball icons Chris Corchiani and TJ Warren have shown their support for Gainey. His appointment could help heal the wounds left by Wade, whose departure was marked by a late-season slump and contentious remarks.
The transfer portal opens soon, and Gainey will face the challenge of stabilizing the roster. Paul McNeil, potentially NC State’s top returning scorer, would be under his third coach in as many seasons. New recruits Cole Cloer and Trevon Carter-Givens are set to join the program.
Gainey’s deep ties to NC State and his coaching acumen make him a promising choice to steer the Wolfpack into a new era.
