Rueben Chinyelu Gets Major Naismith Finalist Update

Florida's Rueben Chinyelu stands out nationally with remarkable stats and honors, earning him a spot as a finalist for the prestigious Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award.

Florida's own Rueben Chinyelu has been making waves this season, earning a spot as one of the four finalists for the prestigious Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award, courtesy of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Joining him in the elite company are Kansas forward Flory Bidunga, St. John's forward Zuby Ejiofor, and Houston forward Joseph Tugler.

Chinyelu's junior season has been nothing short of remarkable. Dominating the boards, he led the Southeastern Conference and ranked fourth nationally with an impressive 11.2 rebounds per game, 7.3 of which were defensive. Setting a new standard at Florida, Chinyelu recorded 19 double-doubles, becoming the first Gator in half a century to average double-digit rebounds.

His relentless pursuit on the glass saw him snag a program-record 137 offensive rebounds, while his 393 total rebounds this season are the third-best in Florida's storied history, trailing only Neal Walk's legendary performances in the late '60s.

Offensively, Chinyelu chipped in a career-high 10.9 points per game, and his 3.9 offensive boards per contest placed him ninth nationally. His efforts didn't go unnoticed, as the SEC named him both the Defensive Player of the Year and the Scholar Athlete of the Year. He also earned spots on the SEC All-Defensive Team, the SEC Community Service Team, and received First-Team All-SEC honors from the AP.

Reflecting on his achievements, Chinyelu expressed gratitude for his teammates, emphasizing the collective effort behind his individual accolades. "Iron sharpens iron," he noted, highlighting the support and understanding within the team that paved the way for their success.

As the anticipation builds, the winner of the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year will be revealed on April 5 during the Men's Final Four in Indianapolis. Fans have a voice in the outcome, with voting open at www.naismithfanvote.com until April 1. Each fan's vote will contribute to five percent of the total tally.

The finalists were meticulously selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's national voting academy, a group comprised of top journalists, coaches, former award winners, and conference commissioners, all evaluating the season's standout performances.
