TAMPA, FL. - Making History with Every Rebound: Rueben Chinyelu's Record-Breaking Season
Florida's junior center, Rueben Chinyelu, is carving his legacy into the Gators' history books. On Friday, Chinyelu secured his 19th double-double of the season, surpassing the long-standing record set by Bob Smyth in the 1975-76 season. This remarkable feat comes on the heels of Chinyelu setting the single-season record for most offensive rebounds at UF.
Chinyelu's journey to this milestone has been nothing short of spectacular. After transferring from Washington State for the 2024-25 season, he became a cornerstone of Florida's lineup, starting all 40 games and propelling the team to their third national championship. His dominance on the court earned him the SEC Defensive Player of the Year title, along with accolades as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a spot on the All-SEC Second Team.
Despite testing the NBA Draft waters, Chinyelu chose to return to Gainesville, bringing with him a refined offensive touch and improved conditioning. Standing at 6-foot-11, the Enugu Agidi, Nigeria native has become a force in the paint and a defensive stalwart, able to keep pace with guards and control the game on both ends of the floor.
UF head coach Todd Golden, who recruited Chinyelu from the NBA Academy Africa, saw this potential from the start. "We knew he was capable of this leap," Golden noted.
"He was wearing teams down last year, but now he's getting the recognition he deserves. His impact is evident every time he steps on the court."
Chinyelu's presence has been a boon for Florida's frontcourt, boosting the confidence of fellow juniors Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh, as well as senior Micah Handlogten. All four players bring invaluable postseason experience, and Chinyelu's leadership has become a key component of their success.
"His leadership has grown tremendously," Golden praised. "He's become more vocal, his energy is contagious, and his defensive communication is crucial. As a coach, I truly appreciate the pride he's taken in becoming a vocal leader."
With Chinyelu's record-breaking performances and leadership, the Gators are poised for a thrilling postseason run, and fans can only anticipate what heights he will reach next.
