In the world of football, chemistry can be the secret sauce to success, especially when it comes to the connection between a quarterback and his receivers. This season, Florida fans are witnessing a special bond with Aaron Philo and Bailey Stockton, a duo that's been turning heads since their days at Georgia Tech.
These two aren't just teammates; they're best friends and former roommates, bringing a unique dynamic to Jon Sumrall’s squad. Their journey started way back in sixth grade, where they teamed up on both the football and baseball fields-Philo as a pitcher and Stockton patrolling centerfield. Their shared love for sports extended beyond the field, with fishing and golfing becoming part of their routine.
"We've always had the same goals and vision," Stockton shared, reflecting on their high school days at Prince Avenue Christian in Athens, Georgia. It was there that Philo set records, throwing for an astounding 13,922 yards and 159 touchdowns, cementing his name in Georgia high school football history. Stockton, not to be outdone, caught 74 passes for 1,425 yards in his senior year, showcasing his knack for making big plays.
Their chemistry led them to a Georgia State Championship, a testament to their synergy and competitive spirit. Florida head coach Jon Sumrall praised Stockton's relentless drive and playmaking ability, noting his speed and toughness.
Now, the duo is aiming for another championship on a bigger stage in Florida. "It's been awesome seeing him grow," Philo said about Stockton. "We've both improved and it's been great to continue playing together."
Last season, Stockton made his mark in 11 games, starting twice, and racking up 233 receiving yards. Philo, meanwhile, saw action in three games, including one start. Their paths to Florida might not have been meticulously planned, but both players felt a natural pull towards reuniting.
"It wasn't about following each other," Stockton explained. "But we always knew we'd end up playing together again."
Their transition to Florida is further eased by the presence of their former offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, who believed in Philo from the start. "He recruited me to Georgia Tech and has always had faith in me," Philo said.
Joining them in Gainesville are fellow former Yellow Jackets, Eric Singleton Jr., Luke Harpring, and Harrison Moore, creating a familiar environment as they all adjust to their new home. With their shared history and the support of familiar faces, Philo and Stockton are poised to make a significant impact this season.
