Scott Van Pelt says the buzz around Jon Sumrall is real, but it comes with a simple warning: the energy only lasts if Florida wins.
Sumrall has spent the offseason doing everything he can to get Gator fans on his side before his first season in Gainesville. He was never the unanimous favorite with the fan base, but he has worked to change that, making the rounds on just about every Florida-focused podcast he could find.
Then came SEC Media Days last week, where Sumrall got his bigger national introduction. That audience wasn’t living in Gator podcast land, but plenty of people walked away impressed.
Van Pelt is among them. On his SVPod, he said he likes what he has seen from Florida’s new coach this offseason, while also making it clear that the honeymoon can disappear fast if the results don’t follow.
“His energy is incredible. People are in.
When you're that energy, and you're that talk-it-walk kind of thing, you've got to win. I'm saying he's playing it right as an energy to get things going, to try to get people on board.
They'll turn on you in a second.
The easiest thing, you've heard me say it 100 times, easiest thing in the world for a new coach to do is sell energy and optimism in August. You just better win.”
Van Pelt also pointed out that Sumrall understands exactly what kind of league he stepped into.
"He's playing it right to get things going to try to get people on board... you just better win."

That same caution has been part of the conversation all offseason. We’ve said before that Sumrall has a real chance to be the rare coach who fits Florida culturally and wins big.
He has the first part handled.
The second part is still the whole story.
For Florida in year one, the real test won’t just be whether the Gators win or lose. It’ll be why those losses happen.
Is it the offensive line he inherited? Is quarterback play holding things back?
Does he get too conservative late in games? Is the defense not fast enough, or are there too many coverage busts?
Those answers are still unknown.
And there’s a reason that matters. The last time Florida tried to ride out a first-year coach, optimism eventually gave way to concern. The turning point came with Billy Napier’s 2023 loss to Arkansas, when the problems had nothing to do with the talent in Gainesville.
Whether Sumrall runs into the same kind of issues is the question hanging over this season.
Right now, the answer is no.
