Florida’s offense may not go anywhere this fall if the line up front doesn’t come around, and Jon Sumrall isn’t pretending otherwise.
At SEC Media Days on Wednesday, Florida’s new head coach made it clear the offensive line was the first thing that jumped out at him when he arrived in Gainesville. After 15 spring practices, he still sees a group with work to do - even if he believes the players have bought in.
“The biggest disappointment (upon arriving at Florida) was the strength of our O-line was underwhelming,” Sumrall said, via Brett McMurphy of On3. “They've embraced the challenge.”
That challenge matters even more because Florida is also sorting out its quarterback situation. Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. are both inexperienced and battling for the starting job, which puts even more pressure on the line to hold up.
Sumrall said he wants a quarterback who can keep the offense on schedule rather than try to do too much.
“None of them need to be Tim Tebow,” Sumrall said, via ESPN. “They need to be somebody that just manages a game and operates the right way at the line scrimmage and doesn't turn the football over.
“We've got decent skill players around the quarterback position with Jadan Baugh and the receiver group.”
Florida’s spring work is done, but the real heavy lifting still lies ahead. Sumrall will have more than a month with the team in training camp, and those practices will be a major part of any push to bounce back from a 4-8 season in 2025 and get to a bowl game this year.
For that to happen, the Gators are going to need more than hopeful words about the trenches. They’ll need the offensive line - and the defensive line, too - to deliver steady play in SEC games.
