The first training camp of Jon Sumrall’s Florida tenure is about a week away, and the on-field questions will soon take over. But before a snap is played, one part of his debut has already made a strong impression: recruiting.
Florida’s first-year SEC coach has put together a class that has the Gators right in the mix with the conference’s best. The updated Rivals/On3 rankings have Florida seventh nationally, one spot ahead of Texas and three ahead of LSU.
247Sports has the class at No. 9, still comfortably inside the top 10. In the SEC, Florida sits in the top three.
That kind of placement doesn’t happen by accident. Sumrall made it clear early that he planned to attack the trail with energy, and he’s backed that up with a staff that has stayed active and aggressive. The result is a class that looks like it was built with purpose, not just filled out.
“Yeah, I think the recruits in the '27 class feel our staff's authenticity, our energy. That's not myself.
That's the entire staff. That's everybody,” Sumrall said during an appearance on Gators Breakdown in May.
“I also have said this a lot of times, when the University of Florida calls, we can get a lot of people to pick up the phone. And so I think we can get anybody on our campus.”
The headliner so far is five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, the top-ranked interior offensive lineman in the class and a top-five prospect nationally. Once that commitment landed, Sumrall and his staff kept stacking talent around him, adding blue-chip players and high-upside prospects at multiple spots.
Florida has also gone well beyond its usual recruiting lanes. Hiller, who is from Pennsylvania, was drawn in by his relationship with offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, and the Gators have also landed players from Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland, Oklahoma and New Jersey.
There are still a few names to watch. Sumrall remains in the mix for five-star targets Easton Royal, a Texas commit, and Jalen Brewster, who is committed to Texas Tech.
But even with those decisions still unresolved, his first class has already restored a familiar standard in Gainesville. The next step is seeing how far he can push it from here.
