Jon Sumrall made it clear on Saturday night that he has no interest in revisiting Auburn talk.
After Florida beat Auburn, Sumrall was asked during his postgame press conference about the reporting from November that connected him to Auburn’s coaching search. He didn’t leave much room for interpretation.
“Who said I interviewed for this job? What are you talking about?
I didn't interview. They didn't want me, I didn't want them."
That was the full edge of it. No softening, no dancing around the question.
There had been plenty of reporting at the time suggesting Sumrall was a major Auburn target, and whether he actually interviewed or not may come down to how people define the process. But Sumrall’s own version was blunt: “They didn’t want me, I didn’t want them.”
That line also fits the broader picture around his move to Gainesville. Sumrall is an Alabama native, and his wife is an Auburn grad, but once he arrived at Florida, he has acted like a coach fully locked in on one thing only. He has not tried to split his attention or leave any doubt about where his focus is.
There’s also the Auburn-specific wrinkle that fans have been talking about - the idea that Auburn wanted Sumrall to keep defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin on staff.
If that was part of the equation, it would help explain why the fit never happened. In that sense, Sumrall’s “I didn’t want them” line lands with a little more force.
It also tracks with how he has carried himself since taking over in Gainesville. He has not played coy about his commitment to Florida, and that has mattered with the fan base. Gators supporters have responded to a coach who has thrown himself into the job instead of treating it like a stopover.
