Florida’s first fall camp under head coach Jon Sumrall is already moving at full speed, with the Gators stacking four straight days of practice through Saturday as they build toward the 2026 opener against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.
Sumrall, speaking Tuesday while previewing camp, made clear what he wants to see from this team in the practice field. Florida is coming off a 4-8 season in 2025, including a 2-6 mark in the SEC, and the new staff is trying to push the program into a more competitive place this fall.
“There’s a lot of things. We gotta continue to grow as a team and come together.
Have synergy,” Sumrall explained. “We’ve got to have certain guys elevate at certain spots to play winning-level football that still have some question marks at.
Just consistency. Like, there were some flashes of times in the spring where I’m like, 'Oh, this thing could be really good,' but the consistency wasn’t always there.
“We have to get into a space where we bring it every day, and you cannot calculate your effort you give by how you feel. Like, being tough is being at your best no matter what the circumstances are around you.
And so our guys got to get in a routine of, like, man, every time we go out to practice, it’s a great practice because we’re showing up. We’re gonna show up.”

Florida Could Face A Brutal CFP Problem Thanks To Notre Dame
Floridas path to the College Football Playoff just got a little more complicated, and not because of anything happening in Gainesville. Under the 2026 procedures, Notre Dame would be guaranteed a place if it finishes in the top 12, while the playoff will also reserve spots for the Power Four champions and the highest-ranked Group of Six champion. That structure leaves less room for borderline at-large teams and raises the possibility that a strong Florida season could still end with the Gators on the outside looking in.
The uncomfortable part for Florida is how quickly the math can turn against a team with a good record. In the hypothetical scenario the new format creates, a 10-2 Gators team could have the rsum to feel playoff-worthy and still lose out to Notre Dame because of the way the bracket is built.
