Jon Sumrall Faces A November Test Florida Fans Will Feel Fast

Jon Sumrall aims to leverage his impressive November coaching record to drive the Florida Gators toward a strong season finish against formidable opponents.

Jon Sumrall’s first year in Gainesville has already given Florida plenty of swing moments, and November now offers one more chance to shape the season’s final impression.

The Gators have had their share of bright spots under Sumrall. They beat Auburn on the road, knocked off Ole Miss and won in Austin against Texas. But the rough patches have been just as visible, with road losses to Missouri, a defeat against a three-loss South Carolina team and last week’s lopsided loss to Georgia.

Florida still has four games left to sort things out: Oklahoma, at Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State on the road. If the Gators are going to finish strong, Sumrall’s history in November suggests they may be in good hands.

His teams have been almost automatic in the season’s final month. Sumrall is 14-1 in November as a head coach, and his overall 48-15 record helps explain why. The November résumé starts at Troy, where his teams won big late in the year.

In 2022, his first season with the Trojans, Troy went 12-2 and closed with a Sun Belt championship. That November run included wins over Louisiana, Army, Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State. The next year, Troy finished 11-3 and again handled November well, beating South Alabama, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana and Southern Miss.

His first season at Tulane in 2024 was the lone blemish in that stretch, though even that came with a wrinkle. The Green Wave played only three games in November because of a bye the week of Nov.

  1. Tulane beat Temple and Navy but lost 34-24 to Memphis.

Last season, Tulane was perfect in November, going 4-0 with wins over Memphis, Florida Atlantic, Temple and Charlotte. That surge helped the Green Wave reach the AAC title game, and Sumrall later led Tulane to a first-ever CFP berth in school history.

Florida would love to match that kind of late-season push. The path starts with Oklahoma at home this week. The Gators are six-point favorites, but the Sooners have already shown they can land a punch, including an upset of Texas earlier this season.

The toughest hurdle may come next, when Florida travels to No. 7 Kentucky. The 7-1 Wildcats have emerged as a real CFP and SEC contender under first-year head coach Will Stein, and Florida has not won in Lexington since 2019.

After that, Vanderbilt comes to Gainesville. The Commodores are 0-5 in SEC play, so that matchup should give Florida a chance to bank a win. The regular season ends with a road trip to Florida State, where the Gators would figure to be favored against a below-.500 team, though Rivalry Week has a way of making things messy.

A 4-0 November at Florida would stand out even against Sumrall’s strong track record. Still, his teams have repeatedly played their best football when the calendar turns, and that gives the Gators a real blueprint for the stretch run.

Florida Takes Another Hit As Oklahoma Game Nears

Floridas injury picture got a little thinner again as the Week 10 SEC availability report came out ahead of the Oklahoma matchup, with seven players listed for the Gators. The biggest change came with wide receiver Vernell Brown III, who was downgraded from questionable to out after being diagnosed with a grade-1 PCL strain, adding another setback to an offense trying to sort through its options.

Defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud is also unavailable because of a suspension, while Bailey Stockton and Emmanuel Oyebadejo moved in the other direction and were upgraded to probable. Oklahoma enters with its own long list of availability concerns, but Floridas challenge is more immediate: the Gators are still trying to piece together the right lineup as the game approaches, and the final roster picture is far from settled. Florida Faces A Late-Season SEC Test That Will Say Plenty

Floridas late-season stretch brings a familiar kind of pressure, with the Gators heading into an SEC matchup against Oklahoma in a game that should tell a lot about where this team stands. The preview points to the usual mix of personnel and game-plan questions that matter this time of year, when every snap can shape postseason positioning and the conference picture around it.

Around the league, the broader weekend slate adds even more context, with Florida State facing Boston College and UCF meeting Kansas in games that also carry meaningful stakes. For Florida, the focus is less on the surrounding noise and more on how the Gators handle a test like this one, because matchups at this stage tend to expose whether a team is built for the next step or still searching for answers. Former Florida Tight End Has Extra Reason To Hurt The Gators

Hayden Hansens move from Gainesville to Norman already gave Florida fans plenty to think about, and now the former Gators tight end has an added layer of motivation heading into an upcoming SEC matchup. Hansen spent three seasons at the University of Florida before transferring to Oklahoma after Billy Napier was fired, and he has settled into a role with the Sooners this fall.

He has appeared in five games for Oklahoma this season, catching seven passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, and the next stop on the schedule brings him face to face with his old program. For Florida, it is one more reminder that roster turnover can linger well beyond a coaching change, especially when a familiar player ends up on the other sideline. [Read more 🡒]
