Florida’s new defense is already drawing loud praise from one of the team’s most important voices.
At SEC Media Days in Tampa Bay on Wednesday, running back Jadan Baugh said the Gators’ defensive group has the kind of speed and edge that can make life miserable for opposing offenses. With Jon Sumrall reshaping the roster and Florida trying to build toward a winning season - and maybe more - Baugh made it clear he thinks the defense can carry a heavy load early.
“Fast, electric. You've got a lot of guys who are just ready to just put the pads on now even,” Baugh said of the defense, via USA Today. “So I feel like that group in general, they're going to be very, very tough to be able to score on because coach (indiscernible), they come around every day.
“They usually hear them yelling. And that excites me a lot more too because I know my defense is ready to just go out there and kill anybody in front of them.”
That kind of confidence matters for Florida because the offense still has some sorting out to do. The Gators are replacing three starting offensive linemen from last season, and there’s a quarterback battle brewing between Tramell Jones Jr. and Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo. Until that settles, Sumrall will be leaning on the defense to keep the team on track.
The setup fits Sumrall’s background, too. Before becoming head coach at Troy in 2022, he built his reputation as a defensive-minded coach, and Florida appears to have enough talent on that side of the ball to stay competitive while the offense finds its footing under OC Buster Faulkner.
Baugh said the energy around the program has already stood out to him during spring, and he’s trying to match it by becoming a stronger presence himself. With so many new faces in Gainesville, he knows leadership will matter.
“Becoming the best leader I can because we have a lot of guys who were transfers,” Baugh said of his goals heading into training camp. “We've got a lot of young guys that came in.
