Florida running back Jadan Baugh has forced his way into The Sporting News’ Heisman Watch after a huge day against Ole Miss, and the performance came on a stage big enough to get everyone’s attention.
Baugh ran wild in Florida’s 52-28 win on Saturday, piling up 142 yards and three touchdowns against Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and the rest of the Ole Miss defense. That outing pushed him into the conversation with the sport’s other early front-runners and gave the Gators a headline performance to hang their win on.
The Sporting News’ Heisman Watch is put together by voters Cliff Brunt and Jeff Hauser, who cover college football for the outlet. Hauser has voted since 2015 and Brunt since 2017.
Their list is alphabetical, and it reflects the players they would strongly consider for their top three if ballots were being turned in today. The players highlighted are in the top five for one or both voters.
Baugh’s season line is hard to miss. Through four games, he has 83 carries for 600 yards and a nation-leading 11 touchdowns, with three rushing scores already in three games. Against Ole Miss, he handled the ball 29 times and turned that work into one of the weekend’s loudest statements.
Florida now heads to Missouri on Oct. 3, with Baugh carrying the kind of production that gets him mentioned alongside some of the sport’s most productive playmakers.
One of the players he surged past in the spotlight was Chambliss, who still put together a solid outing in the loss. The Ole Miss quarterback has completed 70.8% of his passes this season for 1,222 yards and eight touchdowns, and he has also added 28 carries for 108 yards and four scores.
Against Florida, he completed 25 of 34 passes for 298 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while running seven times for 44 yards. Ole Miss has a bye before visiting Vanderbilt on Oct.
Elsewhere on the watch list, Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith made the biggest impression of the previous week. He carved up Illinois with 12 catches for 217 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-19 win on Saturday. Smith now has 33 receptions for 617 yards and seven touchdowns on the season, and Ohio State goes to Iowa on Saturday to face a defense that will be a very different kind of test.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah keeps stuffing the stat sheet, too. He entered with an 88.7% completion rate, 1,211 passing yards and 14 touchdowns without an interception, along with a passer rating of 228.0.
Against Central Michigan, he completed 23 of 27 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns, and he also ran for a score in Miami’s 52-3 win on Saturday. The Hurricanes visit Clemson on Saturday night.
Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney also stayed in the mix. He has 34 catches for 564 yards and seven touchdowns in four games, and against Central Michigan he added six receptions for 120 yards and a score. Miami’s next stop is Clemson on Saturday night.
The list also includes BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who has completed 71% of his passes for 642 yards and six touchdowns in three games, while adding 12 carries for 64 yards and two scores. In BYU’s 41-23 win over Colorado State on Sept. 19, he went 12 of 16 for 227 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The Cougars visit TCU on Saturday.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning remains on the board as well. He has completed 63.5% of his passes for 862 yards and seven touchdowns, and he has run 32 times for 82 yards.
Against Tennessee on Saturday, he went 14 of 19 for 201 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in a tight win. Texas has a bye before facing Oklahoma in Dallas on Oct.
Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover is another name in the mix. He has completed 70% of his passes for 850 yards, thrown 11 touchdowns and avoided an interception across 80 attempts, while posting a passer rating of 204.4.
In Friday’s 29-23 win over Northwestern, he completed 19 of 29 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown. Indiana visits Rutgers on Saturday.
