Gators Coach Todd Golden Focuses Beyond Titles as Final Stretch Looms

As the Florida Gators strive for consecutive national titles, Coach Todd Golden emphasizes staying grounded amid the present challenges.

The Florida Gators men’s basketball team is on the brink of something special, eyeing the possibility of back-to-back national titles. But for head coach Todd Golden, the focus is firmly on the present moment, not the potential glory that lies ahead.

Ranked No. 7 with a 21-6 record and sitting at 12-2 in the SEC, the Gators are set to face the Texas Longhorns, who stand at 17-10 and 8-6 in the conference. This matchup is just one of four remaining in their regular season, with the SEC tournament in Nashville and the NCAA tournament looming on the horizon.

Golden, reflecting on last year’s journey, emphasizes the importance of staying grounded. “Last year, it was kind of new to us being in that position,” he noted. The Gators were a No. 1 seed in the West Region, conquering a tough lineup of opponents to claim the championship.

In the 2025 SEC tournament, Florida entered as the No. 2 seed, eventually securing their fifth title by defeating Tennessee. With a 27-4 record leading into the conference tournament, they were a force to be reckoned with. Golden, who became the youngest coach since 1983 to win a national championship, is now in his fourth season and ready to tackle new challenges.

“This year, as a staff, we’re more prepared,” Golden said. The experience gained by returning players is invaluable, even as the team adjusts to new roles following the departure of key players like Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin, and Will Richard to the NBA. Clayton Jr. was a standout, averaging 22.3 points per game and earning top honors in the NCAA tournament.

Despite changes, the Gators have retained nine players who continue to drive their success. “There’s definitely a benefit of having that experience from last year,” Golden added, acknowledging the blend of continuity and change.

Alex Condon, a key player averaging 14 points and eight rebounds, echoes Golden’s sentiments. “We just got to take one game at a time,” he said. The team is finding its rhythm, reminiscent of last year’s success.

With games against Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Kentucky remaining, the Gators are in the mix for a potential top seed in the NCAA tournament. Current bracket predictions place them as a No. 3 seed, but Golden knows the next few weeks are critical.

“I think we’re probably two right now if I was doing the bracket, but I’m not,” Golden joked, highlighting the tight competition. The focus remains on winning the league and securing the best possible position for March Madness.

The Gators’ journey is a testament to growth and focus, with Golden steering the ship toward what could be another historic season. As they navigate the final stretch, all eyes are on how they handle the challenges ahead, one game at a time.
