Former Gators QB Will Grier Just Closed The Book On His Career

Quarterback Will Grier calls it a career, leaving a legacy of notable college performances and a brief NFL tenure.

Will Grier’s NFL career is over.

The former quarterback has chosen retirement rather than continuing into the 2026 season, a decision announced by the Carolina Panthers on July 15, 2026.

Grier’s football path started at Florida, where he signed to play for Will Muschamp and redshirted in 2014. The next year, in Jim McElwain’s first season, he put together a strong redshirt freshman run before everything changed.

Grier helped Florida jump out to a 6-0 start, highlighted by a comeback win over Tennessee and a 38-10 rout of then-No. 3 Ole Miss, but his season ended with a year-long suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance.

As a Gator, Grier completed 105 of 160 passes for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and he also scored 2 rushing touchdowns. With a year-long NCAA suspension looming and no guarantee he would reclaim the starting job when he returned in 2016, he transferred.

That move took him to West Virginia, where he sat out the 2016 season and then returned in 2017. The Mountaineers years were the best of his college career. Over two seasons, Grier threw for 7,354 yards and 71 touchdowns, and he finished his college days with a 65.7 completion percentage.

Grier entered the NFL in 2019 and remained in the league through 2024. His only regular-season action came with the Panthers in 2019. He also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, 2022 and 2024, the New England Patriots in 2023 and the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.

He also spent time on Dallas’ practice squad, and he signed with Carolina in April as a free agent before deciding to step away from the game.

Florida Just Lost A Fan Favorite From Its Title Era

Floridas title-era roster took another small but meaningful hit this week, with one of the programs most familiar walk-ons announcing he is moving on. Cooper Josefsberg was part of the group that helped Florida capture both a national championship and an SEC title in 2025, and while his on-court role was limited, he became a recognizable part of the teams day-to-day rhythm over three seasons.

Josefsberg appeared in nine games during his time in Gainesville, and his departure underscores how roster turnover keeps reshaping even the most recent championship teams. Florida is already looking ahead to 2026-27 with returning pieces and new additions, but the loss of a player who helped define the personality of that title run leaves a quiet void around the edges of the roster. Florida Is Down To The Wire In Another Massive Recruiting Battle

Florida is back in the thick of another high-stakes recruiting fight, this time for Adryan Cole, the highly regarded safety from Douglas County, Georgia. The 247Sports rankings have Cole as the No. 27 safety nationally and the No. 26 player in Georgia, which helps explain why his looming decision has drawn so much attention across the Southeast.

Cole is set to announce his commitment Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET on the CBSSports College Football YouTube channel, and Florida is one of four schools still in the mix along with Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss. For the Gators, it is another reminder of how much these late-summer battles can hinge on trust, staff relationships and the way a program sells itself to a top target. [Read more 🡒]
