Will Grier’s NFL career is over.
The former quarterback has chosen retirement rather than continuing into the 2026 season, a decision announced by the Carolina Panthers on July 15, 2026.
Grier’s football path started at Florida, where he signed to play for Will Muschamp and redshirted in 2014. The next year, in Jim McElwain’s first season, he put together a strong redshirt freshman run before everything changed.
Grier helped Florida jump out to a 6-0 start, highlighted by a comeback win over Tennessee and a 38-10 rout of then-No. 3 Ole Miss, but his season ended with a year-long suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance.
As a Gator, Grier completed 105 of 160 passes for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and he also scored 2 rushing touchdowns. With a year-long NCAA suspension looming and no guarantee he would reclaim the starting job when he returned in 2016, he transferred.
That move took him to West Virginia, where he sat out the 2016 season and then returned in 2017. The Mountaineers years were the best of his college career. Over two seasons, Grier threw for 7,354 yards and 71 touchdowns, and he finished his college days with a 65.7 completion percentage.
Grier entered the NFL in 2019 and remained in the league through 2024. His only regular-season action came with the Panthers in 2019. He also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021, 2022 and 2024, the New England Patriots in 2023 and the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.
He also spent time on Dallas’ practice squad, and he signed with Carolina in April as a free agent before deciding to step away from the game.
