Florida’s rebuilt offensive line is about to find out a lot about itself, and the schedule isn’t offering any soft landing.
That was already the concern after spring camp. The roster Jon Sumrall inherited from Billy Napier was solid in plenty of spots, but the trenches were another story. Sumrall brought in Phil Trautwein to coach the offensive line and did what he could in the transfer portal, yet the unit kept drawing his frustration throughout spring and looked rough in the spring game.
Now the challenge gets real. Florida’s four toughest games are Ole Miss, Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma, and CBS Sports just poured more fuel on that fire by ranking the top ten best front sevens in college football. All four of those opponents made the list, which means the Gators are staring at a brutal test right where they can least afford one.
The players Florida will have to sort out in those matchups are no joke: David Stone, Jayden Jackson, Will Echloes, Colin Simmons, Lance Jackson, and Elijah Griffin. If the spring was any indication, those names could have a big day against Florida if the line doesn’t make a major leap before the season starts.
That’s why this stretch may end up defining the Gators’ year. Vegas has Florida at 7.5 wins, and the SEC preseason media poll points toward an 8-4 type season. A lot of fans would take that right now, and it would be a respectable first season for Sumrall.
But if Florida wants to push to 9-3 or better, it has to beat at least one of those heavyweights. You can make the case Sumrall needs to do it, too, especially with Ole Miss and Oklahoma coming to Gainesville and Georgia still listed as a neutral-site game in Atlanta.
In the end, it comes back to the same question: can Florida handle those front sevens well enough to make 9-3 more than a wish? If the answer is no, the ceiling starts to look a lot lower.
