The Florida Gators are running out of room for clean excuses.
Week 6 brought another rough afternoon in Gainesville, and Jon Sumrall didn’t hide from it afterward. After a 38-19 loss to South Carolina at The Swamp, the first-year Florida head coach put the blame on himself and made it clear he didn’t get the response he wanted from his team.
"I'm frustrated with every part of what we did today, and it starts with me. I've got to do a better job of getting this team to play to its best," Sumrall said after the game.
That message landed after Sumrall had already tried to light a fire following Florida’s Week 5 loss to Missouri, calling that defeat a humbling experience and challenging the roster to answer against a struggling South Carolina team. Instead, the Gators managed little beyond an early touchdown pass from Aaron Philo to Bailey Stockton.
Florida has now gone two straight weeks without meeting the physical challenge Sumrall keeps demanding. As Sumrall said, "We are very much a work in progress."
The problem wasn’t just the final score. Jadan Baugh, who had texted everyone involved with Gators football after the Missouri game to promise it wouldn’t happen again, couldn’t deliver the kind of follow-up Florida needed. He did break loose for a 26-yard run in the second half and finished with 59 yards on 15 carries, plus a late touchdown, but that wasn’t enough to steady the offense.
And it wasn’t all on him. Florida’s offensive line, which had outplayed expectations early in the season, slipped back and spent the afternoon under pressure. South Carolina got Dylan Stewart back after a one-week suspension, and he made an immediate impact with a sack as the Gamecocks’ pass rush wore down Philo more and more as the game progressed.
The bigger concern is where this leaves Florida now. A week from a road trip to Texas and with Georgia waiting in Atlanta at the end of October, the Gators no longer look like a team cruising toward the stretch run.
Two weeks ago, a matchup between Florida and Texas as undefeated, top-five teams didn’t sound far-fetched. Now the conversation has shifted to whether Florida can even avoid a four-game losing streak heading into November.
Sumrall has spent months talking about the areas where Florida was short, and he was never shy about it. Some fans brushed that off as coach speak, but he’s been around this league long enough to know how fast things can spiral.
That’s where Florida is now: at the point where the work stops being theoretical. The effort may still be there, but the explosive offense isn’t, and opponents have started to find the weak spots in the secondary. The Gators need answers fast, because the schedule isn’t easing up.

Floridas Ground Game Just Took Another Hit Against South Carolina
Floridas backfield took another hit against South Carolina when sophomore running back Duke Clark left in the second quarter with a left foot injury and did not return. With Clark out, the Gators had to shuffle their rotation and lean on other backs during the third quarter to keep the ground game moving.
The injury adds another layer of concern for a Florida offense already trying to find consistency on the ground. On a different note, linebacker Myles Graham was seen warming up before the third quarter and returned to the sideline dressed out, suggesting a possible return as the game went on. [Read more 🡒]
Florida Faces An Uncomfortable Bounce-Back Test At Home
Florida gets a quick chance to reset at home against South Carolina after the loss to Missouri, a game that exposed just how much the Gators still have to sort out as SEC play settles in. At 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, Florida is still in solid shape, but this matchup in Gainesville carries the feel of an early-season correction point, especially with the weather, injury updates and a few individual performances all part of the backdrop.
South Carolina arrives with a 2-3 record and still looking for its first conference win after an overtime loss to Kentucky, so both teams are bringing some urgency into a game that matters for different reasons. For Florida, the bigger question is how it responds after a stumble at Missouri and whether it can look sharper at home, where the Gators will be judged not just on the result, but on the way they handle a test that should tell a lot about their direction. Florida Still Has One Worry After Late Vernell Brown Decision
Floridas offense got a little clarity this week when sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III was ruled out for the game against South Carolina, even after showing positive progress in practice. The knee strain is being described as low-grade, and head coach Jon Sumralls update suggested there is optimism around Browns overall direction, but the Gators will still have to move forward without one of the young receivers they have been leaning on.
There was better news on the other side of the injury report, with senior safety Bryce Thornton expected to be available after a lower-body issue. Florida also got a look at South Carolinas availability report, which included several players listed out, but Browns status remains the more immediate concern as the Gators try to sort out their depth on offense and wait for the next step in his recovery.
