Floridas Playoff Path Could Come Down To One Brutal Road Trip

Florida fans brace for an exhilarating rollercoaster season as CBS Sports forecasts a dramatic finish with victories over top teams and potential heartbreak against formidable foes.

Florida’s first seven games have already turned the 2026 season into a strange ride, and CBS Sports thinks the back half could be even wilder.

A 5-2 start wouldn’t normally set off alarms, but this isn’t the kind of record that matches the script most Florida fans probably had in mind before kickoff. The Gators have beaten Ole Miss and Texas, while also taking blowout losses to Missouri and South Carolina. That kind of swing has left the season feeling unpredictable, and CBS Sports sees that volatility carrying all the way through the finish line.

In a piece called “College football's 10 bold predictions for season's second half,” Brad Crawford floated a scenario that would leave the SEC packed with teams sitting at 9-3. Florida was one of the five projected to land there, alongside Alabama, Kentucky, LSU, and Tennessee.

The path to get there is the kind of forecast that would send Gator fans straight through a stress test: beat Georgia, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and FSU, then lose to Kentucky.

That setup would be equal parts infuriating and familiar. If Florida were to knock off Georgia and Oklahoma, then still miss out on the SEC title game and the playoff picture because of a stumble against Kentucky, it would create exactly the kind of emotional whiplash that has defined the season so far.

Kentucky, to be fair, is not being treated like a pushover in this projection. ESPN’s FPI currently gives the Wildcats a 52% chance to win, and Florida’s uneven play makes that matchup hard to trust.

At the same time, Kentucky is also working with a first-year coach and a roster that, on paper, looks a tier below Florida’s.

What makes the scenario even more interesting is the playoff math. Florida would own three top-10 wins - Ole Miss, Texas, and Georgia - but depending on how South Carolina closes the year, there could still be a heavy burden hanging over the résumé.

Before any of that matters, though, Florida has to handle Georgia. The Bulldogs loom as the more dangerous challenge on paper.

Still, if there’s one date that should jump off the calendar in this projected finish, it’s November 14 in Lexington. That’s the trap game that could decide whether this season ends with celebration or regret.

Jon Sumralls Late-Game Mindset Said Everything About Florida Vs Texas

With the game against Texas hanging in the balance late in the fourth quarter, Jon Sumralls thinking spoke volumes about how Florida wanted to finish. Rather than settle for a field goal, the Gators coach made it clear he preferred to pick up the first down and keep control of the moment, trusting the offense to do what it needed to do in a pressure spot.

Florida never had to find out what the alternative would have looked like. On a critical third down, Tramell Jones ran for nine yards to seal the win, removing any debate about the choice Sumrall might have faced if the play had come up short. It was the kind of endgame sequence that reflected a coach willing to be aggressive and a team capable of delivering when the situation demanded it. [Read more 🡒]
