No. 24 Florida heads into Week 10 with a clear blueprint on both sides of the ball: get the run game moving, protect the quarterback, and force Oklahoma into mistakes.
On offense, the Gators’ path starts with Tramell Jones Jr. in his first start. Andrew Spivey wants Florida to lean into the quarterback’s mobility. “With Tramell starting on Saturday, I want to see more zone reads and let Tramell run it some to get the offense going.”
Nick Marcinko pointed to Jadan Baugh as the engine Florida has to get humming, but he said that begins with the line. “Florida has to find ways to get Jadan Baugh going offensively, and that starts up front. It seems like the Gators’ offense will only go as far as its offensive line takes it.”
Gentry Hawk made the same point even more bluntly, tying Florida’s offensive ceiling to whether the front can hold up. “Tramell Jones Jr. and this offense will continue to struggle if Florida’s offensive line can’t protect the quarterback and open up running lanes for Jadan Baugh and Duke Clark.
In all three of Florida’s losses, Baugh was held to less than 60 rushing yards behind an offensive line that was physically dominated in each game. If you can’t run the football, the entire offense falls apart.”
Defensively, the focus is squarely on John Mateer. Spivey said Florida has to get after him and make him cough it up. “Florida needs to pressure the heck out of John Mateer and make him turn the ball over because he likes to do that and usually it’s more than once a game.”
Marcinko echoed that view, saying the Gators can create chances if they make Mateer uncomfortable. “You have to harass John Mateer.
He’s going to give you opportunities to create turnovers with his decision-making and tendency to hold onto the ball too long. If Florida can do that, they’ll have a very successful day.”
Hawk added that Oklahoma’s protection issues could open the door for Florida. “The biggest key for Florida’s defense is to create turnovers by attacking a struggling Oklahoma offensive line that ranks No. 120 in pass blocking and No. 101 in run blocking. If you can consistently get to John Mateer and shut down the run game, the senior quarterback will eventually turn the ball over.”
As for a player who should see more action, the panel landed on Justin Williams. Spivey wants to see the freshman’s speed used again after last week’s flashes.
Marcinko agreed, noting, “I’m in agreement with the GC crew. Justin Williams was my top freshman receiver entering the season, and he showed flashes of his speed last week.
I’d look to get him involved again against a tough Oklahoma defense.”
Hawk also backed Williams for a bigger role, especially with Vernell Brown III dealing with a setback. “With Vernell Brown III facing a setback, I’d like to see Justin Williams get more opportunities after flashing some potential early in last week’s loss. I think the freshman has the ability to be a big playmaker for the Gators.”
When it came to the X-factor, the answers split between Jones and Baugh. Spivey said Jones’ legs could swing the game.
Marcinko went with Baugh, pointing to Oklahoma’s missed tackles at linebacker. “For me, the X-factor is Jadan Baugh.
Although Oklahoma’s defense is stout, its top two linebackers have combined for 30 missed tackles this season. When Baugh is at his best, he’s making linebackers miss left and right.
Florida’s offense settles in when Baugh gets going.”
Hawk circled back to the quarterback. “Tramell Jones Jr. will be the X-Factor for Florida in this game. I think the sophomore elevates this offense on the ground by keeping the defense guessing.”

Florida Assistant Emerges In Rival Search That Could Divide Gators Fans
Florida States coaching search has already turned into one of the more interesting storylines in the state, and it has a name Gators fans know well. Buster Faulkner, Floridas offensive coordinator, has surfaced as an intriguing candidate after the Seminoles fired Mike Norvell, a reminder that his rise in coaching has put him on the radar beyond Gainesville. His background is rooted in offense, and that alone makes him a logical fit for a program looking to reset its identity.
For Florida fans, the possibility is awkward in the way rival business often is. Faulkner has not been a head coach before, but Florida States next hire will have to navigate more than just play-calling, with financial limitations and a major rebuild waiting for whoever takes over. If the Seminoles decide to push in that direction, it would create an unusual subplot in the rivalry and leave Gators supporters watching a familiar assistant through a very different lens. Florida Suddenly Has A Depth Problem Ahead Of Oklahoma
Floridas availability picture for Oklahoma took a hit this week, and the early report made the Gators depth concerns hard to miss. Seven players showed up on the initial list, including wide receiver Vernell Brown III as doubtful and four others already ruled out, leaving Florida to sort through its rotation with another SEC test looming.
Jon Sumrall also offered an update on Browns injury status, saying the receiver is still pushing to get back after a recent setback. The other notable absence is defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud, who is suspended for conduct detrimental to the team and will have his status re-evaluated after the game, adding one more layer of uncertainty to a roster already running thin. Vernell Brown IIIs Return Just Became A Bigger Florida Concern
Floridas wide receiver picture took another hit this week with Vernell Brown III now listed as doubtful for the upcoming game against Oklahoma after a knee injury and a setback in practice. The Gators have already had to manage a busy availability report, and head coach Jon Sumrall made clear Browns situation is legitimate after a non-surgical procedure, pushing back on the social media chatter that had started to swirl around the injury.
Browns status matters because he has been part of the offensive conversation all season, and the timing only adds to the uncertainty heading into a tough matchup. Florida is also dealing with several other players listed out or questionable, including defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud, who is suspended and will have his status reevaluated after the game, leaving the Gators with more moving parts than they would like this late in the week.
