Florida’s sixth fall camp practice brought a little more heat, a little more clarity and, for the first time, full pads at the Sanders Practice Fields on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The Gators are still three weeks out from their Sept. 5 season opener against Florida Atlantic, but the tempo is already climbing. Florida is not tackling yet, though the contact level is increasing as the team builds toward its first live tackling on Saturday, Aug. 15, during the first intrasquad scrimmage.
“You're competing all the time, but it's hard to always keep score of a winner or a loser when it's like OK, we're not tackling," Sumrall said. "So, when we go to live stuff a little bit more, there's even more clear winners and losers.
But, yeah, there's some things we do that are that are clearly scored. Clearly, there's something on the line at every rep, but the competitive nature doesn't change.
It's always competitive.”
One of the biggest bright spots from the open portion of practice was the return of sophomore wide receiver Dallas Wilson to live passing drills. Wilson hauled in a leaping catch from Tramell Jones Jr., though the day wasn’t clean overall for either side. Drops popped up throughout the receiving and quarterback work, leaving the unit with an uneven showing.
Florida also kept pushing for answers at edge rusher behind projected starter Jayden Woods. Senior Kofi Asare and freshman KJ Ford continued working in that role, with the staff hoping both can give Woods a reliable breather when he comes off the field. Asare listed 2.5 tackles and 1 sack last season, while Ford added a sack in the spring game.
“I’m competitive so I want to be out there every single snap but that’s not realistic, especially this league," Woods said/ "So I’m comfortable with either of them out there after me.”
Up front, the Gators kept mixing and matching on the offensive line. Bryce Lovett spent time at both guard and tackle, while Fletcher Westphal lined up at right tackle. The battles for left tackle and right guard are still very much open as camp rolls on.
“There’s growth there," Sumrall said. "Are we at a place where I’m really comfortable yet?
No. But are we much improved?
Yeah."
