Florida’s opener against FAU gave the Gators something they had been missing: an offense that looked loose, fast and flat-out dangerous. By the end of a 66-point outburst, it was hard to ignore how much life that performance brought back to Gainesville.
The numbers were loud. Florida piled up 624 yards and turned Jon Sumrall’s debut into a showcase on the offensive side.
Even better for the Gators, it didn’t feel like empty production. The attack had a rhythm to it, and for the first time in years, it looked genuinely fun.
Jadan Baugh was right in the middle of that surge. The running back opened the season with 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries, stringing together enough explosive runs to grab attention well beyond Gainesville. It was the kind of debut that makes people start talking about what might come next in 2026.
Aaron Philo also answered the biggest preseason question hanging over Florida. After eight months of quarterback chatter, he delivered a clean, efficient performance, going 16 of 21 for 275 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score. For now, that should quiet the noise around Tramell Jones.
Still, not everything came out of Saturday polished. Sumrall wasn’t interested in pretending otherwise, especially when it came to the defense.
Florida gave FAU too much cushion and played too conservatively, something Sumrall described by calling the defense “atrocious at times.” That side of the ball is the obvious area to watch as the Gators prepare for Campbell.
There was also a late concern to monitor. On the touchdown pass to Vernell Brown III, Eric Singleton Jr. was rolled into while blocking and left the game with an ankle injury. He is doubtful for Campbell.
Even with 66 points and all that yardage, Florida’s staff still sees room to clean things up. Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner said Tuesday that there are still thing Florida could do even better moving forward.
What stood out beyond the box score was the atmosphere. The Swamp had a different energy to it, the kind of buzz that had been missing for a while in Gainesville. A blowout over FAU helped, sure, but the crowd felt fully engaged again.
Florida stayed at No. 27 in the AP Poll, though there was at least an argument to be made for a bump after week one. The poll, as usual, left plenty of room for debate.

Elsewhere, a few more names surfaced as pieces worth tracking going forward. Roderick Kearney graded as the teams best pass-blocking lineman, JVari Flowers broke up three passes, and Jeramiah McCloud finished with four tackles, half a sack and a pass deflection.
