Florida’s bench didn’t look like a strength in the preseason, but two games into the year, it’s already turned into a real edge for the No. 1 Gators.
After getting outscored and outworked in scrimmages against Baylor and Stetson, Florida’s reserve group has answered with back-to-back winning efforts in the regular season. The Gators opened by beating No.
14 Miami, then followed that with a win over Jacksonville, and in both games the bench held its own. Florida’s reserves outscored Miami’s 22-14 in the opener and topped Jacksonville’s bench 25-21 on Thursday.
Todd Golden has leaned heavily on Urban Klavzar, Domen Petrovic and Isaiah Brown to supply the punch off the bench, and Klavzar has been the most dangerous of the bunch so far. Through two games, he’s averaging 10.5 points per contest while shooting 45.5% from three.
Against Jacksonville, the Slovenian international delivered again. Klavzar finished with 12 points, knocked down three 3-pointers, added one rebound and one assist, and logged 21 minutes.
Petrovic and Brown have also carved out important roles, each playing more than 10 minutes per game. Petrovic is averaging 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds while giving Florida solid defense.
Brown has been even more efficient on the offensive end, shooting 80% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc and 100% at the line while also handling key defensive assignments. He’s putting up 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Those three have done enough to earn Golden’s trust in meaningful spots, but Thursday also gave the staff a chance to see some of the deeper bench pieces in live action. Florida used nine different players off the bench against Jacksonville: Klavzar, Brown, Petrovic, AJ Brown, Alex Kovatchev, Alex Lloyd, Viktor Mikic, Arturas Butajevas and Jones Lay.
The offense from that group wasn’t sharp across the board, but Golden liked what he saw on the other end.
"The guys that don’t generally play a lot, I thought they defended pretty well," Golden said. "They competed, they defended, they got on the glass. Offensively, we weren’t great in those minutes, but they were trying to execute and trying to play the right way."
Two of those reserves made their Gators debut in the win. Brown and Jones both saw their first minutes for Florida on Thursday.
Brown had been in the program since last year, but this was his first official game appearance. In five minutes, he scored three points, pulled down two rebounds and blocked one shot.
His teammates already know what he brings, even without big minutes.
"I think it’s awesome. A.J. is a hell of a player," Gators center Alex Condon said.
"I don’t think he gets enough credit with how much he has helped us... So, A.J. is a really valuable player to this team, and I really liked his transition three."
Golden also praised Brown and Jones for the way they’ve handled the work behind the scenes.
“I’m sure they’re both pretty elated to get on the floor, and to earn some of the reward of all the hard work and dedication that they’ve put into the program," he said. "They’re practicing hard every day. They’re getting beat up by our frontcourt, and they keep coming back with a great attitude and great energy, and I’m happy for both of them."
Florida now turns to Florida State, with the in-state matchup set for Tuesday, Nov. 10 in Tallahassee. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Florida Takes Another Hit As Oklahoma Game Nears
Floridas injury picture got a little thinner again as the Week 10 SEC availability report came out ahead of the Oklahoma matchup, with seven players listed for the Gators. The biggest change came with wide receiver Vernell Brown III, who was downgraded from questionable to out after being diagnosed with a grade-1 PCL strain, adding another setback to an offense trying to sort through its options.
Defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud is also unavailable because of a suspension, while Bailey Stockton and Emmanuel Oyebadejo moved in the other direction and were upgraded to probable. Oklahoma enters with its own long list of availability concerns, but Floridas challenge is more immediate: the Gators are still trying to piece together the right lineup as the game approaches, and the final roster picture is far from settled. Florida Faces A Late-Season SEC Test That Will Say Plenty
Floridas late-season stretch brings a familiar kind of pressure, with the Gators heading into an SEC matchup against Oklahoma in a game that should tell a lot about where this team stands. The preview points to the usual mix of personnel and game-plan questions that matter this time of year, when every snap can shape postseason positioning and the conference picture around it.
Around the league, the broader weekend slate adds even more context, with Florida State facing Boston College and UCF meeting Kansas in games that also carry meaningful stakes. For Florida, the focus is less on the surrounding noise and more on how the Gators handle a test like this one, because matchups at this stage tend to expose whether a team is built for the next step or still searching for answers. Former Florida Tight End Has Extra Reason To Hurt The Gators
Hayden Hansens move from Gainesville to Norman already gave Florida fans plenty to think about, and now the former Gators tight end has an added layer of motivation heading into an upcoming SEC matchup. Hansen spent three seasons at the University of Florida before transferring to Oklahoma after Billy Napier was fired, and he has settled into a role with the Sooners this fall.
He has appeared in five games for Oklahoma this season, catching seven passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, and the next stop on the schedule brings him face to face with his old program. For Florida, it is one more reminder that roster turnover can linger well beyond a coaching change, especially when a familiar player ends up on the other sideline. [Read more 🡒]
