Floridas 2027 QB Picture Just Got More Complicated

As Davin Davidson's visit to Oklahoma looms, Florida eyes him as a crucial piece in shaping their quarterback landscape for the class of 2027.

Florida’s quarterback future is already starting to take shape, and Davin Davidson is right in the middle of it.

When Jon Sumrall arrived in Gainesville, one of his first priorities was to secure a quarterback for the class of 2027. He moved quickly on Sarasota Cardinal Mooney’s Davin Davidson, who has climbed from a low-tier QB into a top-125 overall prospect and one of the key pieces in Florida’s 2027 class.

Now Davidson is headed back to The Swamp for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma, a visit that could help strengthen this year’s commit group. Before that trip, though, his 2026 season deserves a look.

Cardinal Mooney is coming off an FHSAA 2A state title and appears headed for another deep playoff run. The team finished 9-1 and put up at least 39 points in every regular-season game. In the MaxPreps rankings, where the 2026 numbers come with their own caveats, Mooney is listed No. 3 in Florida’s 3A.

Davidson’s production has tracked closely with what he did a year ago. He is averaging 160 passing yards per game, just ahead of the 157 yards per game he posted in 2025. His touchdown rate is slightly up, and so is his interception rate.

The traits that first put him on Florida’s radar are still there on his senior tape. Back in January, after reviewing his junior film, the evaluation was clear:

“Davidson stands tall and doesn’t seem to panic much in the pocket. He frequently is able to fire throws into tight windows, and he is very comfortable when having to throw on the run, despite his lanky frame that could make throws like that a challenge.

He has some scramble ability, but it is not a key component of his game.”

That description still fits much of what shows up now. Davidson is at his best when he gets outside the pocket to the right and drives the ball downfield. There are also flashes that suggest he could be used more in the run game, though he has less than 100 rushing yards this season.

The one thing that stands out is how quickly he seems to want to get to that right side. At times, he appears eager to roll out before fully working through the pocket, rather than hanging in or stepping up. He has shown he can stay put, absorb contact, and still deliver the throw, but more often he looks ready to escape early.

Those are still productive plays, but that habit could become a problem if it carries over to the SEC, where rolling right too soon is the kind of thing defenses eventually punish.

Long term, Florida may have a crowded quarterback room by the time Davidson is ready to make his move. Tramell Jones and Aaron Philo will have to decide whether they are staying or leaving, true freshman Will Griffin has been making progress in practice, and Sumrall may also turn to the transfer portal.

So it could be a couple of years before Davidson is in a position to make real noise in Gainesville. Even so, if he sharpens a few areas of his game, there is a path for him to become an effective quarterback for the Gators down the line.

Florida Assistant Emerges In Rival Search That Could Divide Gators Fans

Florida States coaching search has already turned into one of the more interesting storylines in the state, and it has a name Gators fans know well. Buster Faulkner, Floridas offensive coordinator, has surfaced as an intriguing candidate after the Seminoles fired Mike Norvell, a reminder that his rise in coaching has put him on the radar beyond Gainesville. His background is rooted in offense, and that alone makes him a logical fit for a program looking to reset its identity.

For Florida fans, the possibility is awkward in the way rival business often is. Faulkner has not been a head coach before, but Florida States next hire will have to navigate more than just play-calling, with financial limitations and a major rebuild waiting for whoever takes over. If the Seminoles decide to push in that direction, it would create an unusual subplot in the rivalry and leave Gators supporters watching a familiar assistant through a very different lens. Florida Suddenly Has A Depth Problem Ahead Of Oklahoma

Floridas availability picture for Oklahoma took a hit this week, and the early report made the Gators depth concerns hard to miss. Seven players showed up on the initial list, including wide receiver Vernell Brown III as doubtful and four others already ruled out, leaving Florida to sort through its rotation with another SEC test looming.

Jon Sumrall also offered an update on Browns injury status, saying the receiver is still pushing to get back after a recent setback. The other notable absence is defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud, who is suspended for conduct detrimental to the team and will have his status re-evaluated after the game, adding one more layer of uncertainty to a roster already running thin. Vernell Brown IIIs Return Just Became A Bigger Florida Concern

Floridas wide receiver picture took another hit this week with Vernell Brown III now listed as doubtful for the upcoming game against Oklahoma after a knee injury and a setback in practice. The Gators have already had to manage a busy availability report, and head coach Jon Sumrall made clear Browns situation is legitimate after a non-surgical procedure, pushing back on the social media chatter that had started to swirl around the injury.

Browns status matters because he has been part of the offensive conversation all season, and the timing only adds to the uncertainty heading into a tough matchup. Florida is also dealing with several other players listed out or questionable, including defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud, who is suspended and will have his status reevaluated after the game, leaving the Gators with more moving parts than they would like this late in the week.
