TAMPA - In a heart-stopping finish, Florida's dreams of repeating as national champions were dashed in the blink of an eye during March Madness. The Gators, despite a valiant comeback, fell to Iowa 73-72 in a thrilling Round of 32 showdown.
Trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, Florida (27-8) clawed back to take the lead, only to see their hopes unravel in the final moments. With eight seconds on the clock, Isaiah Brown had a chance to secure at least an overtime opportunity at the free-throw line.
Holding a 71-70 lead, Brown missed his first free throw but managed to sink the second. “It was disappointing,” Brown reflected.
“We worked so hard to get back into it. This one stings.”
Florida's strategy was clear: foul Iowa during their final possession to force high-pressure free throws. Coach Todd Golden was confident that even if Iowa made both, the Gators would have the upper hand in overtime. However, the plan faltered when they failed to foul and allowed Iowa's Bennett Stirtz to make a crucial play.
“We wanted to keep the ball out of Bennett's hands,” Golden explained. “But they executed a double stagger, and he got loose.”
Stirtz found Alvaro Folgueiras, who, despite earlier getting tangled in a double technical, rose to the occasion with a go-ahead 3-pointer, leaving just 4.5 seconds on the clock.
Golden acknowledged the breakdown: “We didn’t execute as planned. They made a tough shot when it mattered.”
With time running out, Florida designed a play for a potential game-winner. Xaivian Lee had options: pass to 3-point shooter Urban Klavzar, find Thomas Haugh, or take it himself. Lee chose to pass.
“I thought I had time for a dunk,” Lee said. “Maybe I could have gone for a floater.”
Golden believed Lee had a clear path: “I would have preferred him to attack the rim. His defender wasn’t in a good position. But it was a split-second decision.”
Despite the outcome, the Gators showed resilience and fight. As they process this tough loss, the lessons learned will undoubtedly fuel their drive for future success.
