Florida’s path back to the top of college football runs through a familiar formula: recruiting, resources and a coach who can make it all click. Josh Pate believes the Gators have enough in place to climb back into the sport’s upper tier if Jon Sumrall proves to be the right hire.
Pate put Florida alongside Virginia Tech and Texas A&M as programs with a real shot to become top-10 brands during his show on Saturday. His view on the Gators was simple: the ceiling is already there, and it has been reached before.
"If John Summrall is the right hire at Florida, Florida will again be a top 10 brand," Pate said. "Everything's there.
We've already seen it happen. We saw it happen under Spurrier.
We saw it happen again under Urban Meyer. So there's no doubt about the qualifications.
This is like a car that has won multiple races, so it's proven itself. We just need to make sure the tires are right.

Like Florida just needs to be the best version of themselves, because that's plenty good enough to be a top 10 brand.
The case for Florida starts with the program’s track record. Since 1996, the Gators have won three national titles and four SEC championships, putting them near the top of the list of SEC teams that have mattered over the last three decades.
But the gap between past success and present relevance has been real. Florida has not been in the national championship conversation since Urban Meyer stepped down in 2010, and the Gators have still never reached the College Football Playoff since it began in 2014.
That’s why Sumrall’s arrival matters so much. Florida believes he can steer the program back toward national relevance, even as he has said he needs stronger support and more resources to keep pace with the SEC’s best.
Pate also pointed to the pieces Florida already has working in its favor. He cited the stadium and fan base as two of the best in college football, and said the Gators can recruit elite talent in their own backyard.
The transfer portal only adds to that advantage. Pate said Florida should be able to bring in the kind of key players needed for a playoff push, similar to what Miami has done in recent years.
