Florida's Texas Upset Hopes May Depend On One Massive Problem

Texas' formidable defensive lineman Colin Simmons, not quarterback Arch Manning, poses the real danger for Florida, forcing the Gators to face their offensive line vulnerabilities head-on.

Florida’s challenge this Saturday isn’t really about figuring out Arch Manning. Yes, the Longhorns’ quarterback is the name most Gator fans will know first, and yes, the attention around him has been there since birth. But the matchup that could decide everything sits elsewhere, on the defensive line, where Colin Simmons is waiting to blow up Florida’s plan.

That’s the problem for a Florida offense that has already been wobbling. The Gators’ offensive line has had a rough couple of weeks, and the entire attack has stalled along with it. Now they draw Simmons, a pass rusher who has been circling recruiting boards for years and who has turned that hype into real damage at the college level.

Back in 2023, while Florida was pretending to try to recruit him, the evaluation was already clear enough. As the source put it:

“Most of his production is simply beating the opposing tackle around the edge. But he is so fast around the edge that tackles in Texas just didn’t have an answer for him.

The problem for those same tackles is that even when they do engage, he has the ability to disengage, and when they finally think they have a read on Simmons and try to beat him to the outside, he simply cuts in and beats them to the inside.

His motor is outstanding, and his play recognition is great even when there is a ton of chaos around him.”

That kind of skill set has only traveled upward with him. Simmons is now viewed as a projected top ten pick for the 2027 NFL Draft, and the production backs up the reputation. He leads the nation with 9.5 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss, and he’s the kind of player who can wreck a game even when he’s collecting attention for his celebrations and the personal foul calls that come with them.

The warning signs are there for Florida. After what South Carolina EDGE Dylan Stewart did against the Gators, Simmons is the sort of force that can make life miserable all afternoon if Florida isn’t sharp.

Jon Sumrall didn’t hide how impressed he was after watching Simmons on tape.

"You look at this EDGE, that Colin Simmons kid, that these guys got. Like, holy cow.

Like, he's wow good. I really started to watch the tape last night.

I'm like, all right, I'm just going to turn this off. I don't even want to watch this guy anymore right now.

So he's a really good player. ”

Florida’s best answer may come from the edges of its own formation. Buster Faulkner said Tuesday that the Gators could have helped themselves more with better support along the offensive line. Emeka Ugorji got beaten badly on Saturday, and Florida’s tight ends and running backs did not provide enough chip help.

That makes the tight ends a key part of this matchup. Their work against Simmons could become a constant chess match whenever Florida has the ball. The group has shown it can handle that kind of assignment, but the physical edge it displayed early in the season has faded over the last two weeks.

There is one more reason this matters. In last year’s upset of Texas, Simmons was the only Longhorn who created real pressure on Florida. If the Gators can limit him this time, they give themselves a real shot at another upset on Saturday.

Florida Fans Just Got A New Reason To Worry About Arch Manning

Arch Manning has been a familiar name in Gainesville for a while, and not just because of the family tree. During a stretch when the Manning family was based nearby in New Orleans, Archie Manning arranged for his grandson to throw footballs at Tulanes stadium with coach Jon Sumralls permission, simply because it was an easy place for the family to work and stay loose. Sumrall, who has spent time at both Tulane and Florida, would occasionally watch those sessions and came away impressed by what he saw.

For Florida fans, the part worth noticing is that Manning is still the Texas quarterback and still looks like the kind of problem defenses dread solving. He is known as a dual-threat player, and Sumralls admiration only reinforces that he is more than a polished passer. When a quarterback can stress a defense with his arm and legs, every future matchup starts to look a little more complicated. [Read more 🡒]

Floridas Next Stretch Will Say Everything About Jon Sumralls First Season

Floridas start under Jon Sumrall looked like the sort of opening that can calm a restless fan base, but the mood around the program has shifted quickly after consecutive losses. Paul Finebaum has framed the Gators as one of the SECs biggest mysteries because the early promise has given way to uneven play, leaving the next stretch to serve as a real measure of where the first-year coach has this team headed.

Even with the setbacks, there is still reason to think the foundation could eventually be sturdier than the present record suggests. Finebaum has been confident Sumrall can improve the program over time, and Floridas recruiting momentum, including a commitment from a top 2027 wide receiver, adds another layer of intrigue to a class that already looks strong on paper. Florida May Be Headed For A Tough QB Call Before Texas

Florida heads into its matchup with No. 7 Texas with the quarterback situation still cloudy, as junior Aaron Philos status is uncertain because of an undisclosed injury. The uncertainty adds another layer to a game that was already going to demand clean execution, and it leaves the Gators with an important decision to monitor as the week moves on.

Jon Sumrall did not flag Philo as a player who might miss the game during his press conference, which at least suggests there is still time for the picture to clear up. On a more encouraging note for Florida, sophomore receiver Vernell Brown III has been practicing as he comes back from a knee injury and is considered likely to play, giving the offense at least one more piece trending in the right direction.
