Florida’s rise in the AP Top 25 came fast, and it came with plenty of fuel behind it.
After blowing past Ole Miss, the Gators jumped from No. 21 to No. 8 in this week’s poll. It’s the first time Florida has been in the top 25 since the Week Five poll in 2021, and it also puts the Gators back in the top ten for the first time since 2021.
The poll’s top ten now reads Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and BYU.
Texas at No. 1 makes sense. Georgia at No. 2 is reasonable.
Notre Dame sitting at No. 3 is a little strange, especially with the Fighting Irish carrying the No. 99 strength of schedule and not exactly blowing the doors off Michigan State. Miami is up at No. 4 despite the No. 108 strength of schedule, though they did finally get to play a Saturday game.
Ohio State at No. 5, even after the loss to Texas, feels fair enough.
Indiana is another team getting a boost from reputation, with the No. 109 strength of schedule and a narrow escape against Northwestern. Alabama, meanwhile, has computer numbers similar to Florida’s, but Alabama is Alabama, so the Tide get the edge.
Florida’s résumé, though, is strong enough to make a louder argument. Based on the Jeff Sagarin computer rankings, the Gators are one of only two teams with two top-30 wins, with Ole Miss and Auburn on that list. Texas is the other team in that group, and Texas is also the only program with a better Strength of Record than Florida.
That’s why the ranking feels a little conservative. Florida started the season unranked, and that early hole still matters when the polls reshuffle the top teams. Even after turning in a more impressive body of work, the Gators still have to climb past programs that were already sitting ahead of them.
Does that change anything right now?
Not officially, no.
But once Florida gets into the playoff conversation, the details start to count. If this AP poll were the final playoff ranking, Florida would be the last team in line to host a first-round game, and that matchup would send the Gators right back against Ole Miss.
None of it will matter if Florida stumbles against Missouri or South Carolina over the next two weeks. But if the Gators keep rolling and reach 6-0, the playoff path gets very real - and so do these rankings.
