Florida basketball's dynamic duo, Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon, know all too well how the NCAA Tournament can pivot on a single play. As freshmen, they experienced the sting of a narrow loss to Colorado, falling 102-100 on a last-second shot. But that setback was merely the beginning of their journey.
Fast forward to their sophomore year, and Haugh and Condon were instrumental in driving the Gators to their third national title. Their resilience shone through as they orchestrated four second-half comebacks in just six games. Now, as juniors, these towering forwards-Haugh at 6-foot-9 and Condon at 6-foot-11-are pivotal once more, bringing both skill and leadership to their third NCAA Tournament campaign.
Reflecting on the past, Haugh shared, "That loss to Colorado taught us a lot. You can't take any game for granted.
Every team here deserves their spot." With those lessons in mind, Florida strides into the tournament as a No. 1 seed, ready to face Prairie View A&M.
With a 26-7 record, the Gators clinched their first SEC regular season title since 2014, despite a stumble against Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament semifinals.
Condon echoed the sentiment of staying hungry, "We've been winning a lot, but this year is different. We can't get complacent."
Haugh has thrived in his new role on the wing, posting impressive averages of 17.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, earning him All-American honors. "I lead by example, on and off the court," he said, highlighting his approach to leadership.
Condon, hailing from Perth, Australia, has hit his stride recently, scoring 20 or more points in five of his last eight games, with averages of 19.9 points and 6.6 rebounds during that stretch. Embracing his leadership role, Condon focuses on accountability and communication, both with teammates and head coach Todd Golden. "You practice how you play," he emphasized, underscoring the importance of elite practices.
Center Rueben Chinyelu, with his own tournament experience, complements Haugh and Condon, forming a formidable trio poised to defend their championship title. Coach Golden praised their leadership, particularly in guiding less experienced teammates, ensuring the Gators are primed for March Madness.
As Florida embarks on this tournament journey, the lessons of the past and the leadership of Haugh and Condon will be crucial in their quest for back-to-back titles.
