Missouri freshman offensive tackle Johnnie “DJ” Jones has received a heart transplant and is recovering, the school said Thursday, just two days after coach Eli Drinkwitz disclosed that the 18-year-old was on a transplant list.
In a statement released Thursday morning, Missouri said, “Last night, DJ received his heart transplant, and his surgery went well. He is now recovering.” The school also thanked the medical team that treated Jones and the donor family “whose extraordinary gift made this possible.”
The update followed a difficult stretch in which Missouri’s medical staff first detected a heart issue during freshman intake testing this summer. Drinkwitz said the staff monitored Jones in Columbia for about two weeks without finding a resolution, then sent him to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where doctors uncovered “a much more significant issue.”
“Last week, we found out that Johnnie is now on a heart transplant list,” Drinkwitz said Tuesday. “He’s in Mayo, and it’s tough right now.”
Jones came to Columbia as the top-rated signee in Missouri’s 2026 recruiting class. 247Sports ranked the four-star prospect as the No. 11 offensive tackle and No. 108 overall player in the cycle.
The 6-foot-6 lineman played left tackle at Venice High School, which reached its division’s championship game during his senior season. He originally committed to UCLA before choosing Missouri over Georgia, Ole Miss, Florida and Florida State, then signed in early December.
Jones has not played in a game this season. On Oct. 6, La’Ron Louis created a support page with a $200,000 goal to help the Jones family with hospital bills, transportation, meals and time away from work during his extended hospital stay.
Drinkwitz also mentioned Jones after Missouri’s 45-17 win over then-No. 8 Florida on Saturday, a result that moved the Tigers 11 spots to No. 14 in the AP Top 25 at 4-1. SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum used the loss to rule Florida out of the College Football Playoff race.
“I know Johnnie was watching our game,” Drinkwitz said Tuesday. “But we’re praying for him, and I know a lot of Mizzou fans will hopefully join in that prayer, because he does need help in a hurry.”
Missouri’s next game is against Texas A&M at noon ET Saturday at Faurot Field on ABC, and the school said it will continue to share updates on Jones’ recovery when possible.

Florida Suddenly Have Two Roster Situations Fans Will Be Watching Closely
Floridas injury report added a little more intrigue ahead of the next game, with Vernell Brown III now listed as questionable because of a knee injury. For a Gators team already trying to manage health and momentum, any shift in availability matters, especially when the roster is still settling into the demands of the season.
Meanwhile, another Florida program is dealing with a much different kind of roster news. Gymnastics coach Jenny Rowland confirmed that three team members have been dismissed, though no reasons were given, and the program has offered little else publicly. On a different front, the SEC also released Florida mens basketballs official TV schedule for the 2027 season, setting the stage for a slate that will give Gators fans a clearer look at some of the bigger matchups ahead. Todd Golden Just Added To A Florida Strength Fans Should Notice
Floridas frontcourt pipeline got another boost with the commitment of four-star center Kamsi Awaka in the 2027 recruiting class. He joins four-star forward Ian Condon in a group that already points to Todd Golden keeping the Gators stocked with size, and it fits the broader direction of a program that has leaned into developing big men who can affect the game in multiple ways.
That matters because the Gators have also seen real growth from current pieces like Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon, giving the roster a stronger interior foundation than it has had in recent seasons. With recent NCAA Tournament runs helping raise the standard, another high-level frontcourt addition only sharpens the long-term outlook, even if the full payoff is still a couple of years away. Florida Just Added A Frontcourt Piece Fans Will Notice
Florida has added another piece to its future frontcourt with the commitment of Kamsi Awaka, a four-star center from Blair Academy in New Jersey. Awaka is one of the more highly regarded big men in the 2027 class, ranked as the No. 5 center nationally, and his pledge gives the Gators a second commitment in that recruiting group.
Awaka made his decision after an official visit and came away with a strong impression of Florida and its coaching staff, choosing the Gators over several other schools. For Florida, it is another sign that the program can get in early on nationally recognized talent, and for fans it is the kind of addition that hints at how the next wave of size in Gainesville could start to take shape.
