Florida QB Picture Just Got More Complicated After Georgia Loss

Florida's quarterback dilemma deepens as coach Jon Sumrall reveals a potential surgery for Tramell Jones Jr., casting doubt on the lineup for their crucial upcoming games.

Florida’s quarterback picture got murkier after the Gators’ 28-7 loss to Georgia, and Jon Sumrall didn’t exactly clear it up afterward.

Sumrall had gone with Aaron Philo to start the annual rivalry game, even though Tramell Jones Jr. had helped spark Florida’s upset of Texas two weeks earlier. That choice didn’t hold for long.

Philo threw two interceptions in the first half and was replaced by Jones, but the switch didn’t change much for the offense. Jones also tossed an interception and finished with 172 passing yards, plus a late garbage-time rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

After the game, Sumrall said Jones has been dealing with an injury that "may require surgery" after the season. He did not say what the injury is.

"He's got an injury that may require surgery after the year," Sumrall told reporters." Tramell really didn't look great with his health.

I'm not going to tell y'all his injury because I'm not trying to help other people right now. But he's got a real injury, I think some people are questioning what's going on."

Both quarterbacks were listed on Florida’s injury report before the Georgia game. Philo had missed the Texas game because of a shoulder injury he picked up earlier in the season, and Sumrall said Jones’ health, along with Philo’s practice work, shaped the decision on who would start.

"Rewind [to] the bye week," Sumrall continued. "Tramell really on Thursday of the bye week during our last practice was not anywhere near 100%.

I'm not going to disclose his injury but he did not come out of run-action, play-action, plays full speed with the injury he had. It presented worse later in the bye week.

Then on the Monday practice just from an execution standpoint, Philo was a lot cleaner earlier in the week, Monday-Tuesday."

Sumrall said Jones had the better practice on Wednesday, but Philo’s stronger work over the first three days gave him the edge.

Florida now has to sort out the position quickly with Oklahoma coming to town next week. Sumrall didn’t sound ready to lock in either quarterback, and the Gators are trying to avoid a second straight home loss to the Sooners.

With Jones’ injury in the mix, Florida may be leaning toward the healthier option in Philo for the stretch run. The Gators still have four games left against Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State, and if Philo plays the way he did against Georgia, the finish could get rough in a hurry.

Florida Suddenly Has A Bigger Vernell Brown Problem Than Expected

Floridas offense took a hit before kickoff against Georgia when Vernell Brown III was ruled out after aggravating a knee injury in practice. Head coach Jon Sumrall had initially listed Brown as probable, but swelling in the knee changed the picture and kept him out of the game, leaving the Gators without one of their more important receiving options at a time when they needed every available weapon.

Browns absence was felt quickly as Florida struggled to get much going on offense. For a team already trying to find consistency, losing a receiver who had been trending toward playing only to have the injury flare up again only added to the frustration, and it now leaves the Gators waiting to see how quickly he can get back to full strength. Florida Blew Another Georgia Shot Before The Game Even Started

The quarterback decision was the first big storyline of Floridas matchup with Georgia, and it did not take long for it to become a problem. Jon Sumrall went with Aaron Philo to start the game, even though there were questions about whether he was ready for that stage, and the move quickly put the Gators in a hole as the offense struggled to find any rhythm.

After Philo threw his second interception, Sumrall turned to Tramell Jones in search of a spark, but by then Florida was already fighting uphill. Turnovers helped drive the 31-8 loss, and the early switch only underscored how much the Gators had left on the table before the game even settled in. [Read more 🡒]

Floridas No. 1 Start Gets An Immediate Test From Miami

Florida opens the season with the kind of spotlight game that can shape a November resume before the calendar even gets moving. The Gators, ranked No. 1 in the preseason, head to Tampa to face No. 14 Miami in a matchup that comes with plenty of early-season weight, especially for a Florida team bringing back most of its scoring from last years SEC championship squad.

Miami has its own agenda after rebuilding the roster and landing in a top-15 spot of its own. The teams already know each other well after meeting twice last season, with Florida winning both, but this one offers a fresh test for both sides and an immediate chance to see whether the Gators lofty ranking holds up under real pressure.
