The first year of the Jon Sumrall era at Florida opens with a familiar kind of pressure: a home game, a heavy favorite tag, and a fan base eager to see the Gators look like a real SEC team again.
Florida welcomes Florida Atlantic to kick off the 2026 season, and the number is a big one - nearly four touchdowns in the Gators’ favor. That lines up with the gap between the programs. FAU went 4-8 in 2026 in the AAC, while Florida also finished 4-8 in 2025, only against much tougher competition in the SEC.
Sumrall arrives in Gainesville with some real juice on his résumé. He led Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season, and Florida is banking on that edge to show up quickly after the Billy Napier era stalled out. He also knows this opponent well, since Tulane won the AAC last season with Sumrall at the controls.
The quarterback situation is one of the biggest reasons to keep an eye on this game. DJ Lagway is gone, and transfer Aaron Philo is expected to step in for Florida. He has only attempted 102 passes in his college career, so there’s plenty of room for early-season growing pains.
FAU has its own veteran passer in Cade Veltkamp, and he brings a lot of volume to the table. He started at Western Kentucky in 2024 and threw for 3,108 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. After transferring to FAU, he was even busier in 2025, attempting 515 passes and finishing with 3,641 yards, 24 scores and 17 picks.
That arm talent is obvious. The ball production is there.
But the turnovers are a major concern, especially with an SEC defense on the other side. Veltkamp’s return helps the Owls, yet there’s real doubt about whether he can protect the football in this spot.
The broader team numbers point the same direction. FAU’s defense was shaky last season, ranking 105th in EPA/Play and 100th nationally in net EPA/Play.
The Owls also went just 3-5 in AAC play. Florida, even in a down year, finished 45th in the country in EPA/Play and went 4-2 at home in “The Swamp.”
That home edge matters here. Even with a quarterback making his way into a bigger role, Florida looks set up to handle business in Week 1. FAU has the passing game to keep things interesting for stretches, but the combination of defensive issues and a difficult road environment makes an upset feel unlikely.
My prediction: Florida wins at home.
