Florida’s win at Auburn turned into a coming-out party for Emmanuel Oyebadejo, and the Gators defender made sure everybody noticed.
Just 388 days earlier, Oyebadejo was taking his first collegiate snaps with Jacksonville State. Before that, the 6-foot-6, 299-pound edge rusher had spent most of his athletic life on a basketball court in England, where he played until he was 18.
He didn’t even get into club football until 2023 at the University of Exeter, while he was attending medical school. From there, he climbed to the FBS level with Jacksonville State in America, and then, after one full season and 653 snaps, he made another leap - this time into SEC football.
On Saturday night, in Auburn, 4,191 miles from home and in a stadium with 88,000 more seats than the multi-purpose recreation field where he started the game, Oyebadejo looked like he belonged immediately. Better than that, he looked like a difference-maker.
He piled up 2.5 sacks, tied for the team lead, and added seven total pressures and three hurries in just 37 snaps, according to PFF. His 84.5 grade was the best on Florida’s roster.
That kind of disruption mattered because Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown never settled in. Florida kept the pressure on all night, and Oyebadejo was central to that effort.
The remarkable part is that he may not have played at all. He had suffered an ankle injury two weeks earlier and was a game-time decision.
“Since I’ve been playing football, I never had a week like this. Coming back from my ankle, it wasn’t a typical game week.
Wednesday, I didn’t think I was going to play in this game. I didn’t know if I was going to travel or not,” Oyebadejo shared after the game.
“... I found out, like, ‘we’re gonna have you warm up, see how you feeling’.
So from that point, I just had it in my mind. The hardest part of the game is the mental aspect.
Physically I wasn’t 100%, but mentally, I had to push.”
The first drive told the story. Oyebadejo stepped in and immediately stacked back-to-back sacks on Brown, ending an Auburn red-zone push after Florida’s only turnover.
“The week has been so difficult. For me to come out and make those plays, it was really fulfilling,” Oyebadejo said.
“... I ain’t have the typical preparation this week.
I’ve been preparing for this the entire year. I’ve spent so much time working on my game, working on my pash rush, having the skillset, having moves I can use.
Even though this week wasn’t typical, I can still lean back on the stuff that I’ve been building. Not even this year, but over the last couple years.”
For a player with so little experience, coming off an injury, and walking into an atmosphere he had never seen before, Oyebadejo didn’t just hold his own. He looked like the best player on the field at times. After that showing and his standout Week 1 effort against FAU, the signs point to a defender who could be special for Florida in 2026.
"So proud of him showing up and playing with the toughness he did," head coach Jon Sumrall said.
Oyebadejo’s numbers and physical traits already jump off the page. He was measured at 12 percent body fat and clocked at 20 miles per hour during the offseason, and Florida’s staff has every reason to believe there’s even more room for him to grow as the experience keeps piling up.
For now, the Gators have every reason to enjoy the flashes they’re getting from a transfer who is quickly making himself impossible to ignore.

The Gators are 3-0 for the first time since 2019, and they finally snapped their SEC road drought with a performance that leaned on timely offense and a defense that kept hunting all afternoon.
Jadan Baugh powered the day with 162 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard burst on fourth-and-one that turned into one of the games defining plays. Navarro picked Auburn to edge Florida 28-27, pointing to a matchup that could hinge on whether Jadan Baugh can crack a run defense that has been stout so far this season.
