Florida May Finally Have A Quarterback Worth The Tebow Talk

Could freshman phenom Will Griffin be the spark the Gators need to revive their glory days with his Tebow-like prowess?

The Florida Gators may have a new quarterback to build around, and one SEC recruiting coordinator thinks Will Griffin brings at least some of the same ingredients that made Tim Tebow such a force.

That comparison comes with a warning attached. The coordinator was careful not to put Griffin directly in Tebow’s lane, but the traits are there to see. “I'm never going to compare anyone to Tebow, but I think (Will) Griffin has the potential to have that kind of impact,” the coordinator said.

Griffin is a freshman quarterback with real physical presence at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, and Florida is hoping that size, arm strength and mobility can help spark the kind of turnaround the program has been chasing for years. The Gators have spent a long stretch trying to get back to the level where they were once a yearly national championship threat, and new head coach Jon Sumrall is now the one tasked with pushing them there.

The recruiting coordinator pointed to the same broad profile that once made Tebow such a unique figure in Gainesville. “He's a big kid with a strong arm.

Just like Tebow, Griffin uses his physical ability and athleticism to make plays on the ground and is a local high school legend just like Tebow. Griffin has a lot of work to do, but he has the potential to be a program changer for Florida.”

Florida’s need at quarterback has been obvious for a while. The program has been searching for elite play at the position, and Griffin’s arrival gives the Gators a player with the kind of ceiling that can at least fuel that conversation.

Rivals rated Griffin a four-star prospect in the 2026 recruiting class and listed him as the No. 19 quarterback in the country. Florida had plenty of competition to land him, with Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan and Texas all among the schools that pushed for his commitment.

Griffin also backed up the hype with production at Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida. In his senior season, according to MaxPreps, he completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,534 yards, 37 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He added 296 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.

Billy Donovan Just Took Another Turn Florida Fans Wont Love

Billy Donovans latest move is another reminder that his coaching path keeps drifting farther from the sideline Florida fans once knew so well. After stepping down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, Donovan is moving into a lead assistant role, a notable shift for a coach whose rsum has long been built around running his own program and who has spent most of the last three decades in head coaching jobs.

For Gators fans, the part that stings is not just the change in title, but the way it closes off the familiar hope that he might someday circle back to college basketball. Donovan has been linked to openings before, including North Carolina, and his name always seems to hover around major jobs when they open. Instead, he is heading into a new stage of his career, and the longer that continues, the more distant that old Florida reunion feels. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Suddenly Has Real Momentum In Battle For No. 1 Recruit

Jalen Brewsters recruitment has taken on a new edge, and Florida is right in the middle of it. The top-ranked football prospect committed to Texas Tech has been weighing other options, with the Gators among the schools staying persistent as coach Jon Sumrall continues to work the relationship in Gainesville. Brewster has already made a visit to Florida, and the staff has kept him engaged as the race for one of the classs biggest names gets more complicated.

LSU has also pushed hard, including a recent visit that put Brewster face-to-face with Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron during the Tigers five-star weekend. Even so, Brewster has kept saying he remains loyal to Texas Tech while leaving the door open to more visits before he makes a final call. For Florida, that means the door is still cracked open in a battle where momentum can change quickly, and the Gators have given themselves a real chance to stay in it. [Read more 🡒]
