Florida May Be Headed For A Tough QB Call Before Texas

With Florida's key quarterback position in limbo, anticipation builds around wide receiver Vernell Brown III's potential impact against Texas.

Florida may have dodged one issue and picked up another as it heads into Saturday’s matchup with No. 7 Texas.

Junior quarterback Aaron Philo’s availability is suddenly unclear, with CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reporting that his “status is in question” for the game. The injury has not been disclosed, and head coach Jon Sumrall did not bring up Philo as a player who might miss time during his weekly press conference Monday.

The SEC’s availability report won’t arrive until Wednesday night, so the Gators still have time before anything becomes official. But the possibility of being without Philo is a significant wrinkle, especially with Florida trying to steady an offense that has slipped after a strong start.

Philo has been productive overall, completing 71% of his throws for 1,341 yards with nine passing touchdowns, three rushing scores and three interceptions. Only one of those turnovers came last week on his own mistake. Even so, his play has been uneven over the last two games, and the Missouri outing two weeks ago was especially rough, when he connected on just 21 of 34 passes.

If Philo can’t go, sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. would get the start. Jones has seen limited action this season, but he has completed 79% of his passes in mop-up duty while throwing two touchdowns and two turnovers.

There is better news on the receiving end. Sophomore Vernell Brown III, who has been dealing with a knee injury, looks like he has a real chance to be back on the field.

Sumrall said Brown was running at about 85% of his top-end speed in practice last Friday, and although he was improving, Florida decided it was not worth pushing him back against South Carolina before he was ready. Brown has now practiced all week and, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, was “the best he’s looked” since hurting his knee during workouts on Wednesday. Thamel also reported that Brown has a “real shot” to play Saturday.

Florida has been a different team with Brown in the lineup. The Gators went 4-0 with him available this season and opened the year with the nation’s best offense.

Brown has caught 271 yards’ worth of passes with two receiving touchdowns, but his impact goes well beyond the box score. He also has two return touchdowns and remains a major piece of Florida’s special teams work.

Florida Fans Just Got A New Reason To Worry About Arch Manning

Arch Manning has been a familiar name in Gainesville for a while, and not just because of the family tree. During a stretch when the Manning family was based nearby in New Orleans, Archie Manning arranged for his grandson to throw footballs at Tulanes stadium with coach Jon Sumralls permission, simply because it was an easy place for the family to work and stay loose. Sumrall, who has spent time at both Tulane and Florida, would occasionally watch those sessions and came away impressed by what he saw.

For Florida fans, the part worth noticing is that Manning is still the Texas quarterback and still looks like the kind of problem defenses dread solving. He is known as a dual-threat player, and Sumralls admiration only reinforces that he is more than a polished passer. When a quarterback can stress a defense with his arm and legs, every future matchup starts to look a little more complicated. [Read more 🡒]

Floridas Next Stretch Will Say Everything About Jon Sumralls First Season

Floridas start under Jon Sumrall looked like the sort of opening that can calm a restless fan base, but the mood around the program has shifted quickly after consecutive losses. Paul Finebaum has framed the Gators as one of the SECs biggest mysteries because the early promise has given way to uneven play, leaving the next stretch to serve as a real measure of where the first-year coach has this team headed.

Even with the setbacks, there is still reason to think the foundation could eventually be sturdier than the present record suggests. Finebaum has been confident Sumrall can improve the program over time, and Floridas recruiting momentum, including a commitment from a top 2027 wide receiver, adds another layer of intrigue to a class that already looks strong on paper. Florida Defense Is Under Pressure As Jon Sumrall Steps In

Jon Sumrall has moved from broad oversight to a much more hands-on role with Floridas defense, and the timing says plenty about where things stand. After the Gators gave up an average of 37.5 points per game in recent contests, Sumrall went back through game film with the unit to stress a simple point: stay within the scheme, but make sure the physical effort matches the urgency of the moment.

Florida now turns its attention to No. 7 Texas, a matchup that will put that message under a brighter spotlight. Sumrall has already made clear the defense needs to improve, and the Gators are working through that challenge with a coach willing to get directly involved in the details as they try to tighten things up before one of their biggest tests.
