Florida Just Made Easton Royal Feel Like A Real Possibility

A potentially game-changing recruitment shift could see Easton Royal swapping his Texas allegiance to the Florida Gators, as the standout wide receiver finds himself increasingly drawn to the promise of success in Gainesville.

Florida’s push for Easton Royal is no longer just wishful thinking.

The latest jolt came from Steve Wiltfong, the Rivals/On3 Vice President of Recruiting, who logged a prediction for Royal to flip to Florida. That matters because Royal has been tied to Texas for nearly two years, and he entered this stretch as the top-ranked wide receiver in the 2027 class. Now, the Gators and LSU are both clearly in the mix, and Wiltfong putting his name behind a flip prediction is the strongest sign yet that something real is happening here.

Royal has helped feed the buzz every time he shows up in Gainesville. He’s clearly enjoying the attention, and his trip for the Ole Miss game gave him a front-row look at what Florida feels like when the place is rolling. That kind of visit can stick with a recruit, and Royal’s interest has only grown louder from there.

There’s also the connection with Sumrall, who built a bond with Royal while they were both in New Orleans and Sumrall was leading Tulane to the College Football Playoff. That relationship gives Florida another layer in this chase, and it’s part of why this recruitment has taken on so much steam.

For Sumrall and this staff, landing Royal would mean more than just adding an elite receiver. It would be a statement about the culture they’re trying to build in Gainesville. Sumrall has made it clear that Florida can sell just as hard as anybody in the country when it comes to top-end talent, and a commitment from Royal would back that up in a big way.

The class itself is already shaping up well. Florida’s 2027 group is ranked 11th nationally and sixth in the SEC with 25 total commitments.

It got moving when five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller jumped on board during the spring, and adding Royal would give the Gators two five-star pledges in Sumrall’s first class. That kind of haul would send a loud message across the league.

Royal is back in Gainesville this weekend, though the setting is a lot different this time. Florida is currently trailing South Carolina by three scores, which is a far cry from the citywide celebration Royal saw two weeks ago. Even so, that contrast could work in Florida’s favor if it leaves him wanting to help turn those kinds of weekends into the norm.

Still, this one is far from settled. Royal is likely headed to Austin in Week 7 to watch Florida play Texas, and the Longhorns will have plenty of pull at home.

Lane Kiffin is also expected to push hard for an in-state player like Royal. Florida may have the edge right now, but there’s a long way to go before this one is finished.

Floridas Ground Game Just Took Another Hit Against South Carolina

Floridas backfield took another hit against South Carolina when sophomore running back Duke Clark left in the second quarter with a left foot injury and did not return. With Clark out, the Gators had to shuffle their rotation and lean on other backs during the third quarter to keep the ground game moving.

The injury adds another layer of concern for a Florida offense already trying to find consistency on the ground. On a different note, linebacker Myles Graham was seen warming up before the third quarter and returned to the sideline dressed out, suggesting a possible return as the game went on. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Faces An Uncomfortable Bounce-Back Test At Home

Florida gets a quick chance to reset at home against South Carolina after the loss to Missouri, a game that exposed just how much the Gators still have to sort out as SEC play settles in. At 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, Florida is still in solid shape, but this matchup in Gainesville carries the feel of an early-season correction point, especially with the weather, injury updates and a few individual performances all part of the backdrop.

South Carolina arrives with a 2-3 record and still looking for its first conference win after an overtime loss to Kentucky, so both teams are bringing some urgency into a game that matters for different reasons. For Florida, the bigger question is how it responds after a stumble at Missouri and whether it can look sharper at home, where the Gators will be judged not just on the result, but on the way they handle a test that should tell a lot about their direction. Florida Still Has One Worry After Late Vernell Brown Decision

Floridas offense got a little clarity this week when sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III was ruled out for the game against South Carolina, even after showing positive progress in practice. The knee strain is being described as low-grade, and head coach Jon Sumralls update suggested there is optimism around Browns overall direction, but the Gators will still have to move forward without one of the young receivers they have been leaning on.

There was better news on the other side of the injury report, with senior safety Bryce Thornton expected to be available after a lower-body issue. Florida also got a look at South Carolinas availability report, which included several players listed out, but Browns status remains the more immediate concern as the Gators try to sort out their depth on offense and wait for the next step in his recovery.
