Florida landed a major piece for its future Monday, beating out Texas for top receiver recruit Easton Royal and giving Jon Sumrall’s 2027 class a lift after back-to-back rough losses.
Royal, a 5-foot-11 ½, 214-pound New Orleans standout, had been the first commitment in Texas’ 2027 class before switching to the Gators. His flip came in the wake of Florida’s 38-19 homecoming loss to South Carolina and then-No. 1 Texas’ 27-24 defeat to rival Oklahoma.
The 247Sports composite ranks Royal as the nation’s No. 1 receiver and No. 5 overall prospect. In 2025, he piled up 2,095 all-purpose yards and 29 touchdowns. He also claimed the Louisiana 5A 100- and 200-meter titles, running 10.17 and 20.84 seconds, respectively, with the 200-meter time wind-aided, per 247Sports.
His commitment pushed Florida to No. 8 in the 247Sports team rankings as the Gators shifted focus to Saturday’s trip to Texas. Royal joins 4-star prospects Elias Pearl of Port Charlotte and Cottondale’s Tramond Williams, along with Fort Lauderdale Dillard’s Anthony Jennings, as Florida keeps stocking up on offense.
That’s been a clear priority for a receiving room that hasn’t matched its preseason hype. Vernell Brown III is still the headline name, posting 17 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns in four games, but he’s missed the last two weeks with a knee injury. That came after a shoulder injury sidelined him during losses to Georgia and Ole Miss in 2025.
Dallas Wilson leads the Gators with 26 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns, using his 6-foot-3, 212-pound frame to create problems for defenses. Behind him, Florida has been searching for more reliable downfield production.
Against South Carolina, Georgia Tech transfer Bailey Stockton had the best game of his Florida career, finishing with eight catches for 127 yards and a 59-yard touchdown that put the Gators ahead 7-0.
Eric Singleton Jr., however, has not provided the expected spark. The Auburn transfer has been limited since suffering a high-ankle sprain on the first series of Florida’s season-opening win over Florida Atlantic. He returned in limited action Sept. 26 against Ole Miss and has since totaled three catches for 50 yards.
TJ Abrams is next in line at receiver and has 10 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown, but he managed only two receptions for 14 yards against South Carolina.
Florida also signed two promising freshmen in 2026: Davian Groce, a top-60 recruit from Frisco, Texas, and Justin Williams, the former Gainesville Buchholz standout who ranked among the nation’s top-200 prospects.

Florida's Slide Just Made A Brutal Stretch Feel Even Bigger
Floridas recent skid has turned what already looked like a difficult run into something much heavier, especially with the Gators now unranked after back-to-back losses. In a week when the broader college football picture shuffled again, the latest top-25 projection only underscored how quickly the margin has narrowed for teams trying to stay relevant in the national conversation.
Georgia, Texas and Alabama remain part of the upper-tier mix, which makes Floridas current spot even more stark by comparison. For a program trying to climb back into the rankings, the immediate challenge is not just stopping the slide, but doing it against a schedule that leaves little room to breathe. [Read more 🡒]
Jon Sumrall Owns Florida's Slide At The Worst Possible Time
After a fast start to the season, Florida has suddenly found itself fighting to steady the course. Jon Sumrall publicly accepted responsibility for the Gators poor showing in a 38-19 loss to South Carolina, a defeat that followed a rough trip to Missouri and left the program looking far different from the one that opened the year with momentum.
The timing could hardly be worse, with Floridas schedule about to turn brutal. Sumrall made clear the frustration is real and the fix has to come quickly, because the Gators are staring at a stretch that will test every part of the roster and the staffs ability to respond before the season slips further off track. Florida Thought Its Quarterback Debate Was Over Until Now
Floridas quarterback situation had looked settled enough after the recent losses, with Aaron Philo handling the job and the staff trying to sort through what the offense could still become. But the last couple of weeks have added a wrinkle, because late-game reps have started to go to Tramell Jones, a move that brings back some of the uncertainty coach Jon Sumrall has already acknowledged when talking about Jones upside and inconsistency.
Philos overall line has been serviceable on paper, but the fuller picture is less comforting for a team still trying to stabilize itself. His passing has not consistently pushed the ball downfield, and the pressure numbers have not been pretty, which is part of why the offense has looked vulnerable when games start to slip away. Jones has now been part of that late-game mix, and even in garbage time, those snaps tend to matter when a coaching staff is still deciding what it trusts most. [Read more 🡒]
