Florida Just Backed Up Its No. 1 Hype Against Miami

Florida's dominant performance against Miami highlights their formidable combination of frontcourt power and improved shooting, firmly establishing them as a leading contender in college basketball.

Florida’s first night as the No. 1 team in the country came with a pretty strong argument for why the Gators are there.

After opening the season with a win over Miami, Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney said Florida had already done enough to validate its top ranking in a roundup of five opening-day overreactions from college basketball. The takeaway was simple: the Gators looked the part.

What stood out most was the frontcourt. Thomas Haugh paced Florida with 19 points, while Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu helped make life difficult for Miami around the rim. In a game that matched up two respected big groups, Florida’s size and physicality ended up tilting the floor.

The other encouraging piece was the shooting. Florida hit 11 of 26 from three-point range, a 42.3% clip, and five of those makes came from the bench. That kind of balance could matter a lot for Todd Golden’s team, especially after last season’s uneven perimeter numbers.

The Gators’ results from deep told a clear story a year ago: they went 16-0 when they shot at least 32% from three, and 11-8 when they fell below that line. So when Golden saw his team knock down shots against Miami, he made sure to notice.

“I'm really excited about the three-point shooting,” Golden said after the win. “We were 42% from three.

Nobody thinks we can shoot. But I think we can shoot; I think we got a chance.”

Sweeney did note that other teams could end up passing Florida as the season unfolds. But for now, the Gators’ opening statement - strong play inside, solid defense, and a much better night from outside - gave them exactly the kind of start that keeps them in the championship conversation.

Florida Faces A Tough SEC Fight For Elite 2028 RB

Florida is in the mix for one of the early headliners in the 2028 class, as four-star running back Dalen Powell has trimmed his recruitment to a top-10 list that includes the Gators and a handful of other power-conference programs. Rated the No. 5 running back in the cycle, Powell has already drawn plenty of national attention, and Florida got in the race with an offer in January 2026.

The competition is already shaping up to be a difficult one. Powell has also spent time at Florida State, while Rivals currently has Ole Miss as the early favorite and LSU as another major threat, which gives the Gators plenty of ground to make up if they want to stay in the hunt for the talented back. Urban Meyers Place In History Sets A Tough Florida Standard

Urban Meyers name still hangs over Florida football for a reason. Across four college programs, he piled up a 187-32 record and built a rsum that keeps him in the national conversation, even years after leaving Gainesville. Sports Illustrated recently placed him No. 10 on its all-time list of college football head coaches, a reminder of just how high the bar was set during his run with the Gators.

For Jon Sumrall, the challenge is obvious. He has opened his Florida tenure with some encouraging wins, but the standard at Florida is not simply being competitive, it is matching the level that turned the program into a national power. In the SEC, where the margin for error is thin and the expectations never ease up, that kind of legacy is less a comfort than a measuring stick. [Read more 🡒]

Floridas Frontcourt Just Sent An Early Message Before Florida State

Floridas frontcourt wasted little time setting the tone in an 88-57 win over Jacksonville, and the early-season glimpse was hard to miss. Rueben Chinyelu, Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh combined for 47 points, giving Todd Golden exactly the kind of interior production that can travel well once the schedule tightens up.

Chinyelu led the way with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds, while Condon added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The result also gave Golden his 105th win at Florida, moving him into fifth place on the programs all-time list, and it arrives with Florida State next on the slate. [Read more 🡒]
