Florida keeps landing in the same spot, and this time the message attached to it is loud: No. 1 isn’t just a ranking for the Gators, it’s a warning label for everybody else in college basketball.
Blue Ribbon put Todd Golden’s team atop its newly released preseason Top 25 on Thursday, slotting Florida ahead of Duke, Illinois, Michigan State and Arizona heading into the 2026-27 season. The placement itself is eye-catching, but the case for it is what really stands out.
Florida is bringing back most of its offensive production from the last two seasons, and senior forward Thomas Haugh is back as the kind of veteran anchor who can drive a team’s ceiling. He enters the year as a legitimate National Player of the Year candidate. One coach put the expectation in especially blunt terms, telling CBS Sports, "I think there's no excuse for Florida to not sit at No. 1 most of the year,"
That kind of standard is hard to miss. It’s also starting to feel like the norm around this team.
Blue Ribbon’s top 10 also includes Duke, Illinois, Michigan State, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Houston, Arkansas and UConn, but Florida is the team at the very top of the board. And that says something about where the Gators sit entering the season: not just in the hunt, but squarely in the role of the team everyone else is trying to catch.
What separates Florida from a lot of other elite teams is continuity. In an era shaped by the transfer portal, the NBA Draft and expanding financial opportunities, rosters can look completely different from one year to the next. Florida kept a major piece of its core intact, and that gives Golden something a lot of teams are still chasing in late summer: familiarity.
Haugh gives the Gators a proven veteran centerpiece, and their frontcourt depth could end up being one of the team’s defining strengths. Plenty of programs have talent.
Duke will again roll out elite players. Illinois is drawing heavy preseason attention after its Final Four run.
Michigan State is Michigan State. Houston barely needs an introduction at this point.
But Florida’s appeal is different. The Gators pair high-end talent with players who already know what Golden wants. That kind of continuity can matter in November and December, when teams are still figuring themselves out and Florida may already be operating with a head start.
It could also set up one of the season’s biggest early showdowns. Florida is scheduled to host Duke in the SEC/ACC Challenge, and Blue Ribbon has the Gators at No. 1 and the Blue Devils at No.
- If both teams take care of business before then, the matchup could arrive with the top two teams in the country sharing the same floor.
That’s the kind of December game that can steer the national conversation for a long stretch.
And Florida will have to keep answering questions after that. The SEC is stacked, with Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas all inside Blue Ribbon’s top 10 and more league teams expected to open the season ranked. There won’t be many soft spots on the schedule.
So being preseason No. 1 is a compliment, sure. But it’s also a challenge.
Florida won’t sneak up on anybody. Every road game gets louder.
Every opponent circles the Gators and believes a win over them can define its season.
