Jon Sumrall has heard enough about Vernell Brown III.
At Monday’s press conference in Gainesville, the Florida coach pointed toward a camera streaming the session and delivered what he called the “official VB3 statement” after fielding his sixth straight question about the injured sophomore wide receiver.
“He wants to play. He's doing everything he can to play," he said.
"He's pissed off he can't play, and he's doing everything in his power to play. It's a real injury that we thought we were on the other side of that he had a setback last week, and it sucks.
I mean, it freaking sucks for him. It sucks for the team because he helps our team be better.
He wants to play. He's doing everything in his power to play football."
Brown III has now missed four games with a knee injury, and what first looked like a manageable issue has stretched into a much longer absence. He was listed as probable on Wednesday’s availability report last week, which suggested a return was close.
But that changed quickly, and by Thursday he had been downgraded to questionable. He ultimately did not play, and the Gators have now gone 18 quarters without him.
Sumrall said Brown III suffered a setback in practice last Wednesday and then had more swelling than expected on Thursday. On3’s Zach Abolverdi reported that Brown III had his knee drained on Thursday, and Sumrall confirmed Monday that he underwent a non-surgical procedure that did not drain the knee.
There is no clear timetable right now.
Sumrall said he does not have "a strong feeling on timeline" for a potential return this season.
"It sucks," Sumrall said. "It sucks for him.
He's working like hell to try to get back. He's frustrated."
The absence has been felt on the field. Florida has lost three of its last four games, and the passing game has not offered much of a threat without Brown III available.
It has also brought a wave of criticism from outside the program, including social media theories suggesting Brown III is choosing not to play or is mentally weak. Sumrall pushed back hard on that idea.
"The guy loves football. He's a Florida Gator.
He's a legacy. His dad is a Gator - there's history," Sumrall said.
"He cares. Wearing the orange and blue means something to him."
Brown III, Sumrall said, is taking the criticism in stride while continuing to do everything he can to get healthy. He also praised the receiver for staying engaged as a leader even while sidelined.
Defensive lineman Brendan Bett echoed that point, saying Brown III has remained involved with the team.
"He's doing everything he can. And all we can do as his teammates is just keep motivating, keep having his back," Bett said.
"But even when we were down at halftime of the Georgia game, he came in and he was talking to the team. So him just always having that leadership role and just always, even though he's not on the field, he's still showing great support just even doing what he can.
"So we're just trying to make sure we have his back, let him know that, 'Hey, we got you', and not to rush back but we do miss you."
Florida’s next availability report is due Wednesday, then again Thursday and Friday at about 8:10 p.m. ET, with a game day update scheduled for Saturday at approximately 6:15 p.m. ET.
The 25th-ranked Gators return home to open the final stretch of the regular season against Oklahoma on Saturday. Vanderbilt and Florida State are also on the schedule, and a road trip to No. 8 Kentucky offers Florida a shot at a third top-10 win this season.
Sumrall said he believes the program is moving in the right direction, even if the results have not been consistent enough yet.
"We’re trending in the right direction and we're about to get this thing really started," he said. "And there's been flashes of it this year, hadn't been consistent enough.
I have championship expectations every day. We're not there yet, and that's frustrating as hell.
But we're going to get there. We are.
I'm very confident in that."

Florida Could Pull Off A Huge Recruiting Surprise Here
A major recruiting decision is coming into focus for one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2028 class, and Florida has managed to stay in the thick of it. Brysen Wright has trimmed his list to Florida, Texas and Miami, with an announcement set for Nov. 5, after taking unofficial visits to all three programs. For the Gators, simply being in the final group for a national-caliber receiver says plenty about the pitch they have made early in the process.
Miami is viewed as the clear favorite in the prediction game, but Florida remains a finalist and has a real chance to make this interesting. Wrights status as a highly ranked prospect gives this race extra weight, especially with three prominent programs still in the mix and a decision date now on the calendar. The Gators will be watching closely to see whether they can turn a strong position into a surprise win. [Read more 🡒]
Floridas Bowl Push Comes Down To Three Urgent Fixes Vs Oklahoma
Floridas path to bowl eligibility heads into a critical stretch against Oklahoma, and the Gators have a short list of issues that need cleaning up if they want to keep their season alive. The offense has been uneven, the defense has had its own lapses, and the Sooners bring enough volatility of their own to make this feel like a game Florida can still control if it gets the basics right.
The first order of business is settling the quarterback rotation, because the Gators cannot afford more uncertainty at the games most important spot. Florida also needs a more productive day from Jadan Baugh on the ground and a steadier pass rush to keep Oklahoma from finding rhythm, but the bigger question is whether the Gators can put those pieces together at the same time when the stakes are this high. Florida Still Waiting On A Key Playmaker As Oklahoma Nears
With Oklahoma closing in, Florida is still waiting on one of its more intriguing playmakers to get back on the field. Jon Sumrall said wide receiver Vernell Brown III is doing everything he can to return after the knee injury he suffered in late September, but the recovery has kept him out for multiple games and left the Gators without a player they had been counting on.
Browns absence has been felt, and Sumrall made clear the setback has been difficult for the receiver as well as the team. For now, his status remains uncertain heading into the matchup with Oklahoma, leaving Florida to prepare without knowing whether one of its key weapons will be available when it matters most.
