Florida Is Slipping And The Georgia Stakes Keep Growing

Georgia solidifies its dominance in the SEC rankings as Florida's slip signals ongoing challenges.

The SEC picture took a sharp turn after Week 6, and the top of the league now looks pretty clear. Georgia has separated itself, Alabama is still right there, Texas is trying to shake off a stunner, and Missouri keeps forcing people to pay attention.

Georgia sits alone at No. 1, and for good reason. The Bulldogs are 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference, and they keep showing up as the most complete team in college football.

They are strong in every phase, and Kirby Smart continues to have the feel for when to push the right buttons. On the road in a place where Georgia has not often had much success, the Bulldogs still walked away with a win.

Alabama checks in at No. 2 at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide’s showdown with Georgia lived up to the billing, with both sides grinding through a physical, hard-nosed battle. Alabama came up short, but there is still a lot in that performance that should leave the Tide feeling good about what comes next.

Texas falls to No. 3 after the loss to Oklahoma. The Longhorns are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, and the upset may end up being more of a reset than a setback.

Steve Sarkisian and Arch Manning do not always seem to be at their best when the pressure rises, and that showed up against the Sooners. Still, Texas has not lost sight of its bigger goals.

The season is still sitting in front of them, and maybe this is the kind of jolt that gets them to relax and play closer to their ceiling.

Missouri rounds out the top four at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Tigers have been tough to fully trust, but back-to-back lopsided wins over Florida and Texas A&M changed the tone a bit. That November 7 meeting with Texas keeps looking more important by the week.

Behind that group, the SEC’s second tier is crowded and unsettled. Ole Miss is 4-1 and 2-1, Kentucky is 5-1 and 3-1, Mississippi State is 5-1 and 2-1, LSU is 4-2 and 1-2, and Tennessee is 5-1 and 2-1.

Any one of those teams could still end up in the playoff mix. Ole Miss, in particular, could matter a lot if it keeps running the ball the way it did against Vanderbilt.

Kentucky has the record to back up the hype right now, but it has to bring that level every week. The Wildcats could be sitting at 9-1 when Missouri arrives on November 21, or they could be much closer to the middle of the pack.

LSU may still be a year away from making a real push. Tennessee, meanwhile, has to solve the quarterback situation before the schedule gets much harder.

The middle of the league is where things get messy. Oklahoma is No. 10 at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in SEC play after its huge upset of Texas.

The question now is whether the Sooners can keep finding points through defense and special teams, because the offense produced only 13. South Carolina is next at 3-3 and 1-3, and the Gamecocks may have the most upside in this bunch even if they are also the most unpredictable.

Florida lands at No. 12 despite a 4-2 record and a 2-2 mark in conference play, with the Gators’ recent issues very much tied to injuries that have left two of their best playmakers either out or not at full strength. If Vernell Brown and Eric Singleton can get healthy by the Georgia game, Florida could be a dangerous underdog.

Auburn is 13th at 3-2 and 1-2, followed by Texas A&M at 3-3 and 1-3. One of those teams should still get to eight wins.

At the bottom, Vanderbilt is 15th at 3-3 and 0-3, while Arkansas is 16th at 2-4 and 0-3. Their Week 7 matchup in Arkansas gives both teams their best remaining shot at another win. There is also plenty of frustration building in Fayetteville, even with Ryan Silverfield only in his first season, and a loss to the Commodores would only add to the anger around him and athletic director Hunter Yurachek.

Florida's Slide Just Made A Brutal Stretch Feel Even Bigger

Floridas recent skid has turned what already looked like a difficult run into something much heavier, especially with the Gators now unranked after back-to-back losses. In a week when the broader college football picture shuffled again, the latest top-25 projection only underscored how quickly the margin has narrowed for teams trying to stay relevant in the national conversation.

Georgia, Texas and Alabama remain part of the upper-tier mix, which makes Floridas current spot even more stark by comparison. For a program trying to climb back into the rankings, the immediate challenge is not just stopping the slide, but doing it against a schedule that leaves little room to breathe. [Read more 🡒]

Jon Sumrall Owns Florida's Slide At The Worst Possible Time

After a fast start to the season, Florida has suddenly found itself fighting to steady the course. Jon Sumrall publicly accepted responsibility for the Gators poor showing in a 38-19 loss to South Carolina, a defeat that followed a rough trip to Missouri and left the program looking far different from the one that opened the year with momentum.

The timing could hardly be worse, with Floridas schedule about to turn brutal. Sumrall made clear the frustration is real and the fix has to come quickly, because the Gators are staring at a stretch that will test every part of the roster and the staffs ability to respond before the season slips further off track. Florida Just Landed The Kind Of Receiver This Offense Needed

Florida added a major piece to its 2027 recruiting class when Easton Royal, one of the top-rated wide receiver prospects in the country, flipped his commitment from Texas to the Gators. It is the kind of win that matters well beyond the recruiting rankings, especially for a program trying to reload a passing game that has needed more playmaking help on the outside.

Royal joins a growing group of notable additions in Floridas class, giving the Gators another big-name talent to sell to future recruits and a potential building block for the offense. For a team looking to strengthen its receiver room after recent struggles, landing a player with Royals profile is the sort of move that can change the conversation around what comes next.
