Florida’s push for Beckham Black just got a major boost in the spotlight, and the Gators are firmly in the hunt for one of the top guards in the 2027 class.
Black, a five-star point guard and the No. 3 overall prospect for the 2027 NBA Draft, has become a name to watch for a long list of national programs. Joe Tipton reported that “Duke, Arkansas, and Texas are three teams sources believe are shaping up well for Beckham Black, the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2027 class,” while also noting that “The 6-foot-3 point guard is also a top priority for Florida, USC, Miami, and North Carolina. Those are the main programs to know at this point.”
The appeal is easy to see. Black put together a strong EYBL showing, averaging 22 points, four rebounds, and five assists while shooting 48 percent from the field and 35 percent from three. That kind of production gives him the kind of all-around profile that can swing a recruiting battle, especially for a program looking for another elite backcourt piece.
Florida has plenty to sell, too. The Gators won the NCAA title in the 2024-25 season with a 36-4 record, then followed that with a 27-8 finish in 2025-26 before falling in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. That recent run keeps them in the conversation as one of the sport’s premier destinations.
They also have a roster in place for 2026-27 that could help keep the momentum rolling. Boogie Fland is set to lead the guard group after averaging 11.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.7 steals per game in 2025-26 while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 24 percent from deep.
Rueben Chinyelu brings the interior presence, posting 10.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, and a block per game on 58.4 percent shooting. Thomas Haugh, meanwhile, looks like a centerpiece after earning Consensus All-American honors with averages of 17.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and a block per game, while shooting 46 percent overall and 32.6 percent from beyond the arc.
With that kind of foundation, Florida has a real case in Black’s recruitment. The Gators are chasing a prospect whose scoring and playmaking could make an immediate impact at the college level, but they’ll have to beat out several heavyweight programs to get him.
