Florida’s passing game could be missing another major piece when the Gators line up against No. 3 Georgia on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
On the eve of the Week 9 showdown, Florida wide receiver Vernell Brown III was downgraded to questionable on the SEC availability report because of a lingering knee injury. Brown has not played since Week 4, and the Gators have been waiting for a possible return since late September.
The sophomore gave Florida a quick burst early in the season, catching 17 passes for 271 yards and 2 touchdowns over four games in September. Since then, though, he has been out of the lineup, leaving Florida without a key weapon in the passing attack.
There had been optimism earlier in the week that Brown could be available for Saturday’s game, which is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. That outlook changed Friday night.
Florida is already going into the game with Aaron Philo at quarterback, according to a report earlier Friday by ESPN insider Pete Thamel, and Brown’s uncertain status only adds to the challenge.
Brown wasn’t the only Florida receiver to land on the availability report Friday night. Bailey Stockton was also listed as questionable after beginning the week as doubtful, a sign his situation improved even as Brown’s worsened.
Stockton has played in all seven of Florida’s games this season and has 27 catches for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2026. If he also can’t go, Florida’s receiving group would take another hit at a time when the Gators can least afford it.

Floridas Georgia Upset Hopes Suddenly Hinge On One Late Question
Florida heads into Atlanta with the kind of uncertainty that can change a game plan before kickoff, and it starts with Vernell Brown III. The wide receiver was downgraded to questionable on the injury report, leaving the Gators to sort through what their offense looks like if one of its more important pieces is limited or unavailable against Georgia.
That matters because Florida is trying to line up an upset with a plan that already has to hold up in a tough matchup on both sides of the ball. The Gators will need their offense to function without much margin for error, and their defense will have to decide whether its blitz-heavy approach can disrupt Gunner Stockton enough to tilt the game. For Florida, the path to an upset is still there, but it may come down to how much Brown can give them and whether the pressure package can do its job. [Read more 🡒]
Tim Tebow Calls Out What Had Florida Falling Apart Vs Georgia
Floridas halftime hole against Georgia had already turned the game into a familiar kind of frustration, and Tim Tebow did not need much time to identify why. Working the break with Roman Harper, Tebow pointed to the Gators turnovers, penalties and lopsided time of possession as the reasons the game had gotten away from them, with Florida staring at a 24-0 deficit after a first half that never found any rhythm.
The mistakes were especially costly. Florida threw two interceptions and also watched a fumble get returned for a touchdown by Georgias Chris Cole, a sequence that left little margin for recovery. Tebow and Harper talked through what Florida would need to change after the break, including getting the quarterback more involved as a runner, but the larger question was whether the Gators could clean up enough of the self-inflicted damage to make the second half competitive. Florida Faces A Risky Georgia Decision At Quarterback
Aaron Philos injury changed the quarterback conversation for Florida in a hurry, and Tramell Jones has been the one to benefit from the opening. The situation has drawn the kind of uncomfortable comparison coaches and fans know all too well: a player gets his chance because someone else is sidelined, and suddenly the depth chart starts to feel less settled than it did a week ago. With upcoming opponents ahead, the Gators are now weighing not just who has the hotter hand, but who can actually hold up.
Both quarterbacks have shown enough to keep the debate alive, but neither is operating at full strength, which makes the decision even trickier. Florida has to balance short-term production with the risk of asking too much from a player who is still managing an injury, and that leaves the staff with a choice that could shape the next stretch of the season. The uncertainty is the point here, because the answer may say as much about health as it does about performance. [Read more 🡒]
