Florida’s bye week didn’t really feel like a bye week. The Gators were off the schedule, but the news kept rolling in, starting with a comeback that changed the mood around the program.
Florida erased a 14-point hole against Texas in Austin and walked away with its second top ten win of the season. Down that much, plenty of Gator fans were bracing for the worst about Jon Sumrall, but the team flipped the script and headed into the break with real momentum.
That win also handed Florida a fresh quarterback storyline heading into Georgia week. Tramell Jones got the start against Texas because Aaron Philo was dealing with a shoulder injury, and Jones did enough to keep the conversation alive. He did not do enough to lock down the job outright, but Philo also hasn’t done enough to make the decision simple in the other direction.
On the defensive side, Florida leaned into aggression. The Gators blitzed on 64% of Manning’s dropbacks as Sumrall pushed for a more attacking plan. After the game, he said he told defensive coordinator Brad White to send more pressure and not worry as much about coverage on the back end.
One of the biggest individual bright spots came from LJ McCray, who posted four tackles and 1.5 sacks against Texas. For Florida, it was the kind of breakout showing that can make people start thinking about his five-star ceiling again.
The payoff showed up in the rankings, too. Florida moved back into the AP Top 25 at No. 20 and entered the bye at 5-2, with Georgia in Atlanta waiting next.
There was also a major basketball headline to track. Todd Golden’s team opened at No. 1 in the preseason AP poll, putting the Gators in national championship territory before a game even counts. As noted this week, no team has been preseason No. 1 and won the national title since UNC in the 2008-09 season.
Not everything looked polished in basketball’s early tune-up work, though. Florida’s 82-76 overtime loss to Baylor exposed some issues, especially from deep and off the bench.
The Gators went just 4-for-29 from three-point range and got only three points from their reserves. It is only an exhibition, but it gave a clear snapshot of where the concern points are.
On the volleyball court, Florida put together a statement of its own. The Gators rallied past No. 12 Texas in five sets, then came back to Gainesville and beat LSU on Friday to improve to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in SEC play.
Soccer settled for a 1-1 draw against Auburn, a result that was probably fair enough. That left Florida at 6-6-4 overall and 2-4-3 in SEC play.
And in the pros, Trask joined the Cowboys’ practice squad, while Clayton signed a two-way deal with the Mavericks after the Memphis Grizzlies waived him.

Floridas Bye Week Comes With Two Huge Questions Before Georgia
Floridas bye week arrives with plenty to sort through after a demanding opening stretch against three ranked opponents in its first seven games. The break gives the Gators a chance to step back and tighten both sides of the ball, with the offense still searching for the right answers and the defense looking for cleaner play in the secondary before the schedule ramps back up.
All of it matters because Georgia is next, and the weeks leading into that matchup often reveal as much about a teams direction as the game itself. Florida also has an eye on other upcoming college football games involving SEC programs and national contenders, since results elsewhere could shape the Gators place in the standings as they head deeper into the season. Florida Fans Have One SEC Result To Watch Closely This Week
Florida gets a quiet weekend with the bye week, but Gators fans still have plenty of scoreboard watching to do around the SEC. The Week 8 slate comes with a full watch guide, complete with kickoff times, TV channels and betting lines, and it sorts the conference games from the ones that are merely worth keeping an eye on to the ones that could actually shape Floridas path in the standings.
Ole Miss against Texas stands out as the one to circle first. It is the matchup with the most relevance to Florida and the kind of late-October heft that can ripple through the league race, which is why it rises above the rest of the schedule as the game Gators fans should have on when the attention turns away from Gainesville. Florida Gets A Shot At A Reeling Georgia Team
Georgias place in the college football pecking order took a hit after a home loss to Auburn sent the Bulldogs tumbling from No. 1 to No. 5 in the rankings. The setback adds a different kind of edge to the annual conference meeting with Florida, which now comes with Georgia trying to steady itself rather than simply protect a top spot.
The teams are set to meet October 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with ABC and ESPN carrying the game. Georgia still has a full closing stretch on its regular-season schedule, but for Florida the immediate focus is simpler: a rivalry game against a suddenly vulnerable opponent, with the national spotlight likely following along.
