The Florida Gators made a thunderous statement in their NCAA Tournament opener, leaving no doubt about their intentions. After a tough loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament, questions loomed about their vulnerability. But those doubts were quickly put to rest with a dominating 114-55 victory over Prairie View A&M, marking the second-largest winning margin in tournament history.
Early on, the Gators found themselves in a tight spot with the score knotted at 15. However, they shifted gears, storming to a 60-21 lead by halftime and continuing their dominance in the second half.
Boogie Fland led the charge with 16 points, one of seven Gators to hit double figures. Florida was on fire, shooting an impressive 64.3% from the field. Concerns about their three-point shooting vanished as they nailed 10-of-22 from beyond the arc.
The Gators dominated the boards, outrebounding Prairie View A&M 47-17, and showcased their teamwork with 29 assists on 45 field goals. In stark contrast, the Panthers managed just six assists and were overwhelmed in the paint, scoring only 10 points to Florida's 64.
While this game wasn’t the ultimate test for Florida, it certainly reinforced their prowess, boosting their record to 27-7. Before the Vanderbilt hiccup, they had a 12-game winning streak with an average victory margin of 20.5 points, so this blowout was no surprise.
Looking ahead, Florida faces a tougher challenge against No. 9 Iowa in the Round of 32. Iowa, fresh off a win over Clemson, presents a formidable opponent.
Coach Todd Golden anticipates a challenging matchup. “It definitely will be, a battle of tempo, a battle of pace," Golden said, acknowledging the skills of Iowa’s coach Ben McCollum and player Bennett Stirtz. "They played really good basketball, and it's going to be a great challenge.”
The showdown with Iowa is set for Sunday evening at 7:10 p.m. ET. Fans can join the conversation and engage with the Gators community on Gators Roundtable.
